T3D 3.6.1 User Interface: Dark UI
by Nils Eikelenboom · 10/09/2014 (9:06 pm) · 19 comments
This recourse can replace the default T3D 3.6.1 user interface (light grey) with another called Dark UI
It looks like this:

[+] Click to enlarge
1. Make a copy of your game folder
- T3D 3.6.1 Empty or Full template is recommended -
2. Download the zip file (3MB)
3. Extract the zip file
4. Select and copy the folders art, core, scripts and tools
5. Paste and overwrite all folders and files in the game folder
6. Delete your DSO files if you have any
7. Start Torque 3D and enjoy

Download, extract and use etc. on your own risk.
I can't be held responsible for any consequences possible!

1. Download and extract the zip file (3MB)
2. Pick what you want to use and have another coffee or 2
3. If you succeed, let me know if you have ideas how to improve this

Download, extract and use etc. on your own risk.
I can't be held responsible for any consequences possible!
Compatibility
The whole thing is fully compatible with T3D 3.5 and 3.6.1. It's based on the 3.5 Empty Template and tested with 3.6.1. This version doesn't need any engine changes, so you don't have to recompile your project. Future T3D updates that involve GUI's, profiles, settings and assets (images) need to be done with care, unless I'm going to update this recourse as well.
If you're still not sure; just try it out on a copy and see for your self!
Known style issues
1. The rulers of the GUI editor are bright instead of dark:
The colours of rulers are hard coded, if changed, a project would need to be recompiled.
2. GuiTextEditSliderCtrl icons (little triangles) should be white instead of black:
The colors of the GuiTextEditSliderCtrl icons are hard coded, if changed, a project would need to be recompiled.
Licence
Note that the Garagegames 2012 MIT licence for Torque 3D has been unchanged and still apply on all files and code that are included in this recourse. The copyright notice and the permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the software.

@Daniel, Now let's make this default in 3.7 :-D

We could start some kind of vote to see how many people would like it as the new default.

The .png images are all uncompressed in this version and significantly bigger than the original ones.
#10
Nonsense! PNG does not work like JPG, there's no compression level to it. Some files might be a bit bigger because a) the colour depth has been changed from 8bit to 24bit, or b) there's more data written in the header of the files.
You can still download this package (3MB) with a 56K modem, no problems.

I just wonder how there is no compression, because if I save the file without compression, it is the same size as yours and when I save it with compression level 9 it is like 10 times smaller.

There is compression, some files you can bring up to a 10 times smaller size or a bit more, depending on the image, some others you cannot compress much, depending on the image.I just wonder how there is no compression, because if I save the file without compression, it is the same size as yours and when I save it with compression level 9 it is like 10 times smaller.

I converted the original 8bit T3D files to 24bit, since we're not in 90's anymore and the T3D editor isn't a web application that should run in a web browser and downloaded over a low speed internet line.
It doesn't do anything with the speed of T3D as well, PNG files I believe, are treated all the same by the engine. Only with DDS files you'd gain something if you reduce the amount of colours in the pallete. Correct?
Finally, don't I see any problems with the few extra kilobytes in the repo as one 2048 texture would fill up that space with a blink of an eye. All with all, I think it's really a waste of time to discuss this at all.

That's not compression Duion, well technically spoken it's not. There are imaging programs/tools that can reduce the size of PNG files by converting the 24bit to 8bit in a smart way. In any way, it's reducing the colour pallete as well.I converted the original 8bit T3D files to 24bit, since we're not in 90's anymore and the T3D editor isn't a web application that should run in a web browser and downloaded over a low speed internet line.

PNG has compression, you wasted resources for nothing and it does not have any advantage.
Even if the resource waste is small, there is still a resource waste and it is not an acceptable practise to work this way.
Even if not significant in this case, all my points are correct.

It is not a waste of time to discuss that, the facts are: PNG has compression, you wasted resources for nothing and it does not have any advantage.
Even if the resource waste is small, there is still a resource waste and it is not an acceptable practise to work this way.
Even if not significant in this case, all my points are correct.

It's Only Changes Color Of UI, Doesn't Change Anything In There

White Is Better Than It, It's Not A Real Dark ThemeIt's Only Changes Color Of UI, Doesn't Change Anything In There

If you find a white GUI better: don't use DarkUI!!!
If you follow the instructions the T3D GUI will look much much much darker then the default one. I don't understand you don't find this a Dark Theme. Perhaps there's something wrong with your monitor settings???
That's the purpose of this resource; to change the appearance of T3D, nothing more nothing less.
Did you expect some more?
Edit: Removed a grumpy remark ;)

@Xspeed, probably I don't fully understand what you mean. But I'll try to respond anyway...Quote:White Is Better Than It

I really like the dark one more, if it helps you, it fits better to my other theme also.

side greed notes : this uses empty template gui files, this can and will cause issues, for example in playgui, GuiShapeNameHud reference is not present.

This recourse hasn't been tested with Greed, nor with T3D 3.7. If you have a fresh 3.6.1 installation you can follow the steps "Easy Instructions", all other follow the steps "Pro Instructions"
