OS Platforms

howdy all -

i've been assuming that T3D would support the same platforms as TGE - Windows, Mac, & Linux.
i can see that graphics might not be supported on Linux,
but being able to compile a dedicated server for linux is pretty important.
is that supported out of the box ?

that's pretty critical for any serious game deployment,
so if not, it probably wouldn't be too hard to do,
but would be sort of a bummer.

unity does not provide a linux server OOTB.

@Orion - I think Alex has offered to integrate a solution the community comes up with into the base engine, if it is stable.

My intern has also taken a crack at getting this support working himself, but is not currently working on it (I need him on another task right now).

hey Michael -
thanks for the reply.

are you speaking about dedicated server support (eg, no graphics) or client support as well ?

my guess is that it's mostly a matter of dis-including some stuff,
and bringing back the unix platform.h stuff.
is platform.h still the approach ?

Dedicated server support.

Not sure of the details, though.

so, we have a genius on our crew, Randall Meyer, and he has already gotten a T3D dedicated server running on linux, albeit with some odd behaviour around some physics in Warrior Camp. (but that's minor) also, physX will probably have to wait, as it looks like the linux SDK from nvidia may be a bit incomplete. i believe he's planning on putting together a how-to.

It'll be nice to see a dedicated Linux server possibility. Looking forward to the How To Orion.

Cheers.

Getting a proper Linux server (or even client) would go hand in hand with a Bullet implementation, wouldn't it? (HINT, HINT!)
