Constuctor the best to create .dif's?

by Katelan Moye · in Constructor · 06/03/2009 (1:14 pm) · 7 replies

I'm interested in who is using what for creating interiors.

Though I've been part of the GarageGames community for over two years, I am still VERY new at this. I have been using Constructor for my interiors. I'm wondering what interiors you all use and more specifically, WHY?

Thanks ahead of time, I'm hoping to create good discussion here, not a battle of which software is better, no arguments, etc...

On second thought, should I be learning about Collada for interior usage instead of .dif?

Which engine? I am currently starting the process of making interiors with Collada to see what happens. I never liked the difs and have pretty much waiting this long for Collada and T3D...

T3D of course =)

What are you using to create your Collada files if you don't mind me asking?

Does Collada support portals? My experience is ONLY with Constructor, I'd be interested in checking out different software to make interiors with Collada but I don't know where to start...

Thanks,

Currently on Interiors support portals and occlusion thereof, but.... things may be friendlier towards mesh shapes real soon :D

With that said I use Constructor to make my DIFs. I like being able to embed .dts shapes into Interiors for easier setup when you have lot's of non-interactive props. Some people use Quark, 3d Word Studio, DeleD, and others, but I find that the standard map2dif exporter does an inferior job when compared to Constructor's native CSX to DIF export.

Hardly anyone knows it, but the buildings shown off in the Constructor screenshots were created for use in Torque 3D, though the big emphasis now is on Collada and polysoup because that's friendlier for artists.

I had to go look back at the pics after your post. I had not seen those pictures yet. Very nice...

@Michael (Mike?)

Thanks for your feedback,

Do you think .dif's will be phased out within a year or two as GG puts so much emphasis on Collada?

If Collada is "the way of the future" with T3D, I'm wondering which software I should learn to use....

I really don't know myself. Though there has been some strong indications that it is likely.
