Would new textures be appreciated?

by Jacob Dankovchik · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/18/2009 (5:50 pm) · 16 replies

In working with the terrains, I grew a bit frustrated with the current default test textures, so I decided to make a few of my own. In my opinion, it was a very large improvement.

Now, I understand that these are just test textures in T3D, not really made to look fancy. But I also understand that GG is a bit busy with making an engine to focus on tons of texture art. From my experience here, I've found most people are a bit slow to make their own stuff and I'm sure it's only a matter of time until people start putting up plenty of examples of stuff with eyesores of terrain textures.

So with that said, based on what you guys see from the examples above, would you say it'd be worth my time to go ahead and make a set of textures to release? Of course, it'd be for free as I don't really believe in selling art packs. I also don't believe in doing everything for everyone, so it wouldn't be all-inclusive, every texture for every need. Just a nice general set of stuff that'd be good for testing and is easy on the eyes.

Any opinions/suggestions? I'm very open to both.

Jacob, that would be awesome! I know I could use them as I am prototyping a project. It would save a lot of time (especialy since I am a programer and not an artist).

Sure, every bit of decent free art is a good thing!

I actually have a set i also made specific for T3D and am going to give away free (free for any and all use as long as my tinny .txt file stay in place), just as soon as they get normal maps(also dds files) working for terrain.

I plan on offering the textures, detail, normal maps and the material definition file for quick and easy drop and go. My set is at 512x512.

@Jacob:

I think the sample art from GG is reasonable, since they are selling an engine/code with tools. The art examples is just for example, place holder, or maybe marketing :-p. I wonder, are screen shots easier to market than more organized cleaner code / doc? ;-)

Could be a great potential help for prototyping though if you'd give out some textures, and maybe a concise tutorial to create a terrain with them (I know the official doc has something too).

Also, if you're interested in joining a project, here's my plug:

One thing Jacob was mentioning is how the included terrain textures look quite sad. Its not that they are bad textures, contrary; it is that T3D use a new terrain system that have quite different texture qualifications. The old TGE/TGEA style terrain textures are near impossible to get looking good with the new T3D terrains.

Some free T3D specific terrain textures would truly help folk get going on their project. It took me many hours to build my T3D texture set and test it to be sure it looks as perfect as possible, that is 2 days time the next person can save.
Between Jacob and my terrain texture sets anyone with a 'paint' program should be able to modify(change some colors, run some filters- anyone can do that much,) themselves a perfectly suitable set of T3D textures in a under an hour.

New textures are always welcome. Being colorblind I tend to create real eyesore(for everybody else) textures myself.

Very much appreciated, as well as any walkthroughs or tutorials on how to create them...even very basic beginning info.

Well, here's what I got so far made. Some of these I don't like too much and will rework, and still have several I need to do. Unfortunately I've picked up a new hobby so that's been sapping some of my time. :P

All textures are 1024z1024, both the diffuse and detail. I know this is much higher than is needed, but I always like to work with the highest res that is able to be worked with and then size it down later to a more reasonable size. Since I plan to hand these textures out, obviously I'd leave that up to you all and will distribute them at their full resolution.

This is awesome. Jacob, send me an email. Maybe we can do more than just this set? We've got a talented bunch here, but really no experienced texture artists on the Torque side. This is definitely help we could use.

Heh, would love to help out with whatever you need, that's the goal here after all. Perhaps I'm just blind and overlooking it, but where IS your email? :P I'm still somewhat unfamiliar with the new site layout since I stopped coming here until just recently, so maybe it's just right in front of me. *shrug*

Well, check your inbox, should be something from me. Hopefully.. Course, everything's been working the way it isn't supposed to so far today, sooo.. Maybe that trend will maintain.

Nice textures Jacob - Over here at GP Interactive, we are working on a new grass texture illusion that shows depth and makes it look like the land is raised up from a higher grass, but it's simply just a texture:

Not bad. Can't wait 'til normal maps work.
