Bug: WaterBlock/River no texture

by Steve Acaster · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/01/2009 (11:01 am) · 48 replies

Waterblock and River Tool do not display a surface texture (during creation or afterwards), thus appearing invisible from outside/above. The volumetric fog of the liquid is there, but only displays from inside the block/river.

Water Plane has no problems and displays fine.

Resolved as of Beta2

did you update your dx redistribution files?

Try to go into play mode. I've noticed the Roads and the River paths for me don't show up properly in edit mode, but in play mode it shows up perfectly fine. Another thing you may want to look at is the Material Editor to make sure you haven't edited the river material(s) by accident.

I just ran into this myself. I thought it wasn't working until I went into play mode in which everything showed up just fine outside of some z-fighting with a road.

dunno, my screenshot is in editor, no problems viewing it at all

DX is all uptodate. Doesn't show in play.

Roads show fine minus the Z fighting.

Water isn't listed in the material editor.

Just to be thorough, I decided to clear up my system and took everything off (DX, GPU drivers, physx, the lot) and try afresh with a full reinstall.

And after all that, nope, no change.

Rivers and Waterblocks don't show their surface texture (in-game or in-editor), yet the Waterplane renders everything no problem.

256mb GeForce 7900GS. Any one else working with an Nvidia 7 Series GPU seeing this?

I can confirm that on a 7000 series nVidia card, my laptop has a 7150m. But for me the waterblocks still continue to render, it's only the river which doesn't show. I can place and edit a river and see the bounds (red and green colors are bad for colorblind people by the way!) but no materials can be seen.

I can reproduce this bug. River doesn't show up in editor or while playing, and I can see the underwater texture, just not the surface texture.
DirectX SDK is current. (followed the link given in the forums here)
I am also using a 7 series card, geforce 7900 GTX GO (laptop).

It must be so much easier developing for console ... :)
"You want it to work across what range of systems?!

Lol, yeah but consoles are so confining.

I can't use console gamepads, 5 minutes and my left thumb completely locks. It's a mouse or nothin'!

I have never heard a programmer say; "I love working with that console...". And as mostly an artist when i am working (on computer games), I have never truly enjoyed working under the tight constrictions of a console either.

Does being in basic or advanced lighting mode make any difference?

Do you have any errors in the console like, shader waterP.hlsl failed to compile, prepassUncondition not recognized, or anything like that?

@Steve YorkshireRifles Acaster: You dont look that old.

@ James, no difference with either lighting system.

@Caylo - I have a sneaking suspicion my dad might have bought it for himself and needed me for the 2 player games....

Is it still doing any of the surface distortion effect at all? Could you turn up the waterFogDensity a bit and then take a screenshot up closer to it?
