Which Web Hosting Service Do You Use?

Hello all. I'm considering changing my hosting service and wanted to poll the community for opionions/experiences. Currently, my site:

Hall Of Worlds

is hosted by Domain Direct. I have a pretty small disk quota, unlimited monthly bandwidth, but the instantaneous bandwidth is limited to 56K. The main page at my site that gets hits is the Torque Notes . Currently it is a sprawling page of note and links. I'm going to give it an overhaul this month and also start adding other Torque related content. So, I know I'll need more disk space, and hopefully higher bandwidth.

Now to the question, "Which Web Hosting Service Do You Use?" I am considering www.powweb.com. Can anyone out there give me some advice or notes on their own hosting experiences?

Thanks,

Ed M.

I use 1and1 as well. They are a local company for me, and they make everything (with the exception unregistering a domain, which requires you to send them a fax, no big deal) quite easy. I'd reccomend them.

Www.doublewidehosting.com has slightly higher prices, but they are rock solid. Small little hosting company, but that's where we typically refer our clients.

I have three websites hosted with www.powweb.com. I can't recommend them enough. They're fast, reliable, have a very busy member forum and tons of faq on how to get the best from your hosted account. I signed up to 2 buy 2 years get 2 years free offers and was fully operational within 24hrs.

In the 3 years I've been hosted with them my website has been down 3 times for no longer than an hour. When they upgraded their systems to load balanced it improved the speed of my site and I have as yet te experiance any downtime.

Hope that helps. :)

I have five domains registered with 1&1. (UK) They are a good company to register your co.uk domains with. Cheap prices for UK domains. ;) I have another domain (.com) at TOSDomains(.net).

I currently host these sites, and others at 2UK2(.com). I will be moving some to 2kXHost(.com) soon, higher prices, but they are a good place to host your sites with. I would refer people to 2kxHost if you know what you are doing, and don't need alot of support.

:)

I hope Edward F. Maurina III found a new host by now, since it's been almost three years when he posted. LOL

I use StartLogic.
They have a great hosting deal, but they don't allow remote database connections. Its $5.00 USD a month for a basic account, 10 if you want a windows-based server.

I use servage.net, they are an amazing host and they can't be beaten on value. They are one of the top hosters in europe and have excellent 24/7 support. i have been with them for a year and it has been a very pleasant experience. they charge

Nice bump for an old thread :)

I use 1and1.co.uk for domain registration. However, I host my websites with DreamHost. I like to keep domains and web packages seperate to make it easier to move hosts should on ever go downhill or the need for more bandwidth/space arise.

Dreamhost is pretty cheap, for what amounts to 2-3 pounds a month I get 1064GB bw p/m and 21280MB storage. Mysql/php/Subversion etc...

If anyone decides to DreamHost, enter the promo code "FIGMENTGAMES" and you'll get up to 40$ off the various packages (slightly less if you go for the really cheap packages).

I think 1and1.co.uk are doing a special at the moment with a 20% discount on their hosting packages, so they may be worth checking out as well.

$99 for a Dedicated Server with less space than a Shared Hosting Package, which is $79 less?
Hmm? :)

Hope that helps,
Tom.

I used Lunar Pages previously, and I'm probably the person who posted the post you saw.

Lunar Pages is nice and has lots of things that you can upgrade, but it's more expensive than alot of other places. One thing about Lunar Pages that annoyed me was that whenever the people who made the free PHP bulletin board that was usable on Lunar Pages updated it, Lunar Pages would give you a deadline that you had to do some mumbo jumbo to update the bulletin board or get it shut off.

There was only one incident where the server my site was on went down. This one incident occurred when I was using Lunar Pages, but it only happened once.

Lunar Pages is decent hosting, but it's more expensive than I would like (currently $6.95 per month with free domain name registration - it was $7.95 per month + $14.95 domain name registration when I used it). I switched to www.3ix.org/ to get megacheap webhosting ($1 per month + about $12 domain name registration).

Now, I want to find a server that supports JSP and servlets. LunarPages does this, but only if you pay extra this month (I think it's only $2 extra per month, but LunarPages is expensive to begin with).

At this time, I plan to switch to www.serversea.com/Hosting/Starter.php. The price ranges from $1.99-$4.99 (including domain name registration). It doesn't give you much bandwith, but it's the cheapest webhosting that allows JSP and servlets (for the Windows versions only) that I know of.

I also considered www.itanets.com/. It's $5 per month + $5 domain name registratrion. It also allows JSP and servlets. Unfortunately, it seems to be slightly inferior to server sea, as well as slightly more expensive. There's a $10 per month version that provides more, but I'm trying to do this cheaply.

Another good option is www.canaca.com/. The price ranges from $3.95-$16.95 per month. Unfortunately, you need the $16.95 version to use JSP and servlets, so it's no good for me.

There's alot of web hosters to choose from, and there's no clear way to determine which is best.

I've used about three different hosts, one that was based off of the GG community, but the guy couldn't get enough support from people, but he had as much space and bandwidth you'd need for $60 a year, which is a good deal considering you have total control over your account. None of the crappy proprietary fluff that ends up in commercial hosters. He ended his service about a year ago.

The one I'm currently using is 1and1 also. Although they aren't horrible, their support is usually backed up quite a bit, and they have no public forums. Databases are separated from your account, and it takes about 30 Min. for the server to process admin requests (e.g. creating a DB, changing passwords, etc.). They also spam you with "promotions", and lock your account if your site is hacked or defaced. My website has been hacked twice using their service. Thereare a number of people who hate 1and1, because of their business practices.

The last I've used was Midphase. Many people complain about rough setup, but overall it's probably one of the best services I've ever used. They are much less "crowded" with people (in comparison to 1and1), so you can get in touch fairly quickly. I've never had any server problems, but they do have quite a bit of server maintainence sometimes which usually lasts an hour (in the middle of the night for those in the US).

Anyway, that was a lot of pointless blabbering.

Awesome support, great featureset, unlimited bandwidth (ok, they throttle it when it gets heavy but who wouldn't??!)... they rock. I've been with them for around 5 years or so and hardly ever seen downtime.

Here's one I'm considering: site ground. They have 24 GB of space, 800 GB monthly bandwidth, and it comes with a free domain name (for new domains only, not transfers) for $4.95 per month (if you sign up for 2 years).

Sounds pretty decent, although I like the looks of 3ix.org, because you can have 5 websites on your server for less than $5 a month. At site ground they charge an extra $30 per year for addon domains.
