Hello all. I'm considering changing my hosting service and wanted to poll the community for opionions/experiences. Currently, my site:
Hall Of Worlds
is hosted by Domain Direct. I have a pretty small disk quota, unlimited monthly bandwidth, but the instantaneous bandwidth is limited to 56K. The main page at my site that gets hits is the Torque Notes . Currently it is a sprawling page of note and links. I'm going to give it an overhaul this month and also start adding other Torque related content. So, I know I'll need more disk space, and hopefully higher bandwidth.
Now to the question, "Which Web Hosting Service Do You Use?" I am considering www.powweb.com. Can anyone out there give me some advice or notes on their own hosting experiences?
Thanks,
Ed M.

My webspace (with all the bells and whistles.... never had such a complete package before, it even has an upload component installed) was bought from http://www.stormhosts.net and my domain is bought trough directnic.com, then the DNS was changed to the DNS server of stormhosts.net (so I can set up my own subdomains etc)oh and... my site is at www.acidstorm.net

I use FeaturePrice.com. They're handy and reliable and inexpensive. At least they have been so far.

I host my own sites, ohh what I would do without DSL. :)

Nathan,
I envy you your ability to host. I have DSL service from Verizon (only provider in my rural area here in O-REE-GON ;) (I live near Portland and could only get DSL as late as last year...). I have a floating address and the EULA basically prohibits placing any kind of server behind the address. You must have a fixed address and a reasonable ISP?
Thanks again,
Ed

Ward,
Took a look at your site. Looking good. Can't wait to see more
charater models. Q: What tools are you using for dev (MS3D, 3DSMAX, Lightwave?) -Ed

65 dollars a year, good tech support, pretty fast and lots of features like subdomains, unlimited email accounts, etc.
Also, the 65 dollars includes your domain name registration.
I've been using them for months and haven't had any downtime yet. :)

They don't have any SPAM protection on their email servers, so I was receiving 50+ spam messages a day. Also, I never get the impression that they're financially stable. I seem to remember them saying that they make no money from the company (??) as they put whatever money they make back into the infrastructure.
Ah well; it's not like I use my site for much these days anyway.

I use www.valuablehost.com. I've not been 100% impressed with them. My site would suddenly disappear for hours on end for no reason. When I'd try to visit their forums to check on the status, the forums would be unavailable as well. Each time I posted a support ticket they would say that the servers were ok, and that it was a problem with my network connection and/or PC. Then it happened when I was at a friend's house and it proved that their server was to blame. They finally admitted the server was at fault. They don't have any SPAM protection on their email servers, so I was receiving 50+ spam messages a day. I can offer you a free domain at our server.
Our servers run on Linux with PHP4, CGI and MySQL.
We have unlimited bandwith, dayly backups, full online admin control and no data limit.
What else do we offer:
FTP account for uploading your site
Unlimited email addresses (well up to 999)
These are real pop3's
Unlimited email aliases
Password protected directories
Unlimited subdomains
Email forwarding
Autoresponders
,....
In short: Fast, safe, feature rich and stable
Unfortunately, the site we use to sell our hosting is in Dutch and not finished (www.xentronix.nl/test), so you can
not check our normal fees.
Of course we would like you to place an adv button to our site www.xentronix.com.
You may place commercial content too.
Restrictions:
You may not place illegal content
You may not publish pornographic content
You may not use it as download server or
warez site.
But I think these are reasonable.
Of course this offer stands for the current setup with all the programming and Torque info.

mmmmmmm, that sounds like a great offer if ever I've heard one. Would I be able to skank some hosting with you? It might mean I can finally get the work-in-progress website I've been building off of my linux partition and out into the world. Running a server from a 56k isn't worth the hassle :D

What is the content of the page ?
How much space do you require ?
Do you need a full domain ?

Its quite expensive compared with some lower cost hosting, but the server is quite fast, and that is what I like most in a host :)
Otherwise for personal stuff, I do have a server hosted by myself. Its quite more advantage to have your own host as you are admin, and you can screw the server over and over as long as your boss doesn't care about it ;)

If anyone is interested, I provide a hosting service. I run high spec Linux servers supporting PHP, MySQL, Perl and a whole list of other features. My website is www.vapournet.com though it's currently undergoing a redesign. However, I can promise that we are one of the cheapest, yet fastest, most secure and most reliable services on the web.Thanks.

Bit late I know, but I use custom-webhosting.com (which I run btw), its not the cheapest in the world, but should you mention that you are a game developer I will supply additional bandwidth and disk space.

Ok,I got a question. Someone in the forums mentioned lunar pages http://www.lunarpages.com . I am wondering if anyone has since signed up with them; and how are they? I know I could read the kudos by supposed current customers on the main site...but I don't much trust that. Thanks in advance,
Jim

Try looking at webhostingtalk.com and look for reports of good/bad hosts there.
