Content Packs - What Would You Like To See ?

by Christopher T. Morrissey · in General Discussion · 01/13/2003 (10:35 pm) · 24 replies

I was wondering what types of content people whould like to see within content packs ?

What things would be most usefull to you, your group, and other people ?

What other games/engines would you like to see content packs made for ?

Post your thoughts please !

Animals, like small birds, fish and anything which would mainly be in the background and not to close to.

So anyone can put them in.

I'd like to see packs of buildings that fit into the same time era, or game style.

Like say European buildings from the WW2 era.. or the type of buildings one would expect in a fantasy game(like lord of the rings type stuff). Those are just some examples that come to mind.

Cars, trucks, jeeps, fire engines, police cars (not just US ones!) etc. etc

Non-science fiction and non-fantasy models of people. I also agree with the idea of packs of buildings from different eras and locations: e.g. 1940s Europe (I need this one!) or 1940s USA for a Mafia style game.

Yes and in multiple formats like MS 3DS & Lightwave.

Example models (player and vehicle) in different formats would be very useful. Also base objects that could be customised. A base low-poly human model for example. Other things like misc background stuff like rocks, crates, lights, etc. Things that aren't real difficult to make but still take time. We all know how little time there is for small teams trying to get too many things done at once.

Personally, I'd like to see more props and background elements than anything. Once of the great things about the tree pack is that you can use it in a wide variety of games without it interfering with the game's style. Plus, trees take time to make. Background elements and props like crates, traffic cones, signposts, etc are also time consuming. They make a scene look great while impacting the actual game very little in most cases. The key is that they make the world look more "real" and you can have your team concentrating on making models and animations that fit within the structure of your game more than working on the background elements.

Just my thoughts.

Some other things that most games will need but I have not seen listed as yet:

Terrain Texture Sets
Skyboxes
Tree models and billboards

BIG NEWS for game developers!!
A new community for open and free game media is being put together. We plan on supporting torque formats. The content that will be freely available under a very liberal free commercial license will cover everything from textures, maps, models, skies, sounds, sprites, code snippets, billboards, and everything else that is produced or donated. Im working on establishing a large texture and model selection. All the media will be released under a modified lgpl license and will be appropriatte in an un-altered state for ANY commmercial or private use.

This sound kewl. Background models wo9uld be best as they can be used in different games and you would model your main characters and other game content yourself. Maybe even look at other types of content like sound.

Models
......
Terrain textures
Trees and plants (models and billboards)
Small animals, birds and fish
Maybe even people - adult, child, etc

Sounds
......
Sound for walking ong different terrain textures
Animal/Insect sounds (or maybe mixed sounds for forest, dessert, plains, etc)

People and vehicles would be the two big things that I'd want. I've got crates, prox mines, etc - that was all pretty easy for me to put together in MilkShape. Player objects on the other hand are a real PITA to start from scratch.

The problem with things like people and vehicles is that they are main characters they will be on the screen a lot, and it would look bad of a lot of games had the same main characters!

Also playable characters tend to be pretty specific to that type of game. One guy might be a futuristic soldier, another might be some sort of army guy, a third some Orc...

The nice thing about trees is that any game set in the past, present or near future can make use of them. Trees have been around a long time!

Things like traffic signs and city stuff...how many TGE games take place in cities?

----

How about a couple of sets of weapons. One realistic modern set, one futuristic set, one medieval set? Maybe some shrubs and other terrain decorations, rock formations, etc. I also agree that terrain textures and skyboxes would be nice.

I like the building suggestion.

Textured, complete buildings, that would be cool. Lots of games could take place in LA or Caen or in a medieval setting (you get the point).

I thought of a content pack. How about explosion models with IFL's for animations for all of the people that don't have 3D Studio Max. Unless i'm misinformed and there is a way to do this without Max.

Trees, hedges, and plants...maybe some leaves and grass...environmental stuff to make things a bit more realistic would be helpful. Stuff like cars, forklifts, and other machinery for warehouses and things of that nature would be cool too.
