That huge image at the top of the page

This one:

Could you just, you know, take it out or something? Even on my high-resolution screens it takes up an unholy amount of screen real estate.
Today, just to see, I tried clicking on the left hand third of it to see what the "tips" part of the community site... and that's when I realised; it's not actually any kind of useful image or anything, it's just ... taking up space. I mean, I never clicked on it because I didn't want to visit a part of the site called "tips", or "development", or "resources", I just wanted to read the forums like I usually do.
And this image just makes it harder to actually read the forums, by taking up the top half of the screen [on my laptop], or quarter of the screen [on my desktop].
Really, please, just take it out. The whole thing. fwoof, like magic, gone.

I have to agree. It's colorful and pretty, but pushes all the useful stuff down quite a ways.

Tip for Firefox users, just yesterday I've resorted to using Adblock plus extension and it works wonders on this image.

I agree, anything to get more useful information on the screen is a good thing. Nearly half of my 22' monitor at 1680 x 1050 is taken up by the heading and navigation along with this image. Tip for Firefox users, just yesterday I've resorted to using Adblock plus extension and it works wonders on this image.

@Bruce - Outstanding results! Thanks for the suggestion.

That image takes up more space then the old snapshot of the day, and has almost no use at all.
I'd rather have 3 snapshots of the day, even if they were old, if I had to choose between that and the current image.
I still miss the snapshots.

@Bruce: awesome tip about Adblock! If GG doesn't listen then we can do it ourselves. I've already changed the colors to something more pleasing to me.Quote:I mean, I never clicked on it because I didn't want to visit a part of the site called "tips", or "development", or "resources", I just wanted to read the forums like I usually do....and if you do click on them they don't take you anywhere other than the What's New page -- which doesn't really serve any practical or useful purpose due to excessive whitespace space.
I too still miss the Snapshots.

AdBlock Plus FTW !

Wouldn't mind if the image was a little smaller and contained some useful/interesting content but as it stands it's a huge block of nothing.

Supreme tip on Adblocking it, can't believe I didn't think of that. Wouldn't mind if the image was a little smaller and contained some useful/interesting content but as it stands it's a huge block of nothing.

Opera has selective image-blocking built in. Zooming a page also zooms images. That banner had to go :(

I didn't think much about the huge community banner before, other than noticing it didn't really do anything useful. Now, however, I'm sitting in the airport on my netbook and the damn thing takes up way too real estate. Time to scratch it.

it is fairly pointless. It links to things that have other methods right next to it so the image is redundant, and does waste space. I think something maybe.. say 30% of its size would be ok.. maybe, but how it is now needs to go.

Thanks for the feedback guys, as always, we are listening. Maybe we can spruce it up a bit after GDC stuff dies down.

ya +1 here as well if each one was its own link to where it should be then maybe i would not mind it. though i have no clue what the middle one is i know what it is but its just not popular so why add that in there for a image.

It's even worse for me. That image is in flash and for whatever reason I just get a great big grey area in both Firefox and IE.

Do you have the latest version of Flash? Can you see the product buttons on the side panels of the product pages?
#17
I cannot see the products buttons on the side panels.
There is no way to reach a page to purchase TGB that I can see.
What was wrong with html that it prevented people from buying your products that links needed to be done in flash?

I'm not sure of the decision behind it, but I believe it was because the cart price could be reflected quickly and easily with a consistent design between the site and the flash controls.

My adblock wasn't set to block anything except popups and GG's site was completely whitelisted and I had no issues with flash on any other site. Completely uninstalling Adblock got the flash image going again.
In any event, requiring flash for this without a more graceful fallback is a bad idea. There is no telling how many users out there don't have flash installed or have an ancient version of it.

It turns out this is an adblock/firefox issue. My adblock wasn't set to block anything except popups and GG's site was completely whitelisted and I had no issues with flash on any other site. Completely uninstalling Adblock got the flash image going again.
