Finally a web plugin for TGB!

by Path · in Torque Game Builder · 03/17/2009 (9:38 am) · 20 replies

I've been going back and forth with the developer for about a month and now it's setup to run TGB on all major browsers.

It has a FREE version along with more advanced versions for a fee.

It requires users to download the player, but it still works great.

Go to www.osakit.com if you're looking for this.

[Should work also with TGE]

Yup it's been around for a long time now, though I haven't heard of anyone who actually uses it. There is also igloader.

That's just it, up until a week ago it didn't work to well with TGB, they've made a bunch of modifications.

As for igloader, that's been discontinued for about 6 months now.

The guy who runs it, Tim Fisher, told me that's he's been meaning to take down the site for awhile, but hasn't gotten around to it.

do they have this for mac as well?

Excellent question. I've been wondering the same thing myself.

The plugin is free to install and as long as you've got your own website, it just takes 10-15 minutes tops to:

1) Encode your finished or partially finished game into an .osa file
2) Encode that file into an .html page
3) Add both files to your site & publish it
4) Test the link.

I'm almost finished with my first web game and will ask them about Mac compatibility when I purchase my game license($39) and report back.

I tried out the demos at their website and my AntiVirus popped up telling me there are trojans. I'm fully aware that there are many false positives out there, so I'm not too alarmed, but since I've never heard of OSAKit before I thought others should be aware.

Good point.

I haven't had that problem when using it on their site, but AntiVirus software reacts differently.

I'd suggest downloading the free version of their encoding software, testing it out by encoding your game, and posting it on your site to see if it's a case of the software itself or just the combo of their site and their software.

OSAKit did a big update recently to version 4.0, but I don't think they took the time to upgrade the games they have on their site which I recall being set up with version 2.0

I just tried it out with a card game I made.

HexCards.

No anti-virus warnings.

That's a cool game.

Took me a second to figure out, but I then realized it's "ultra tic tac toe".

@Eaymon Latif

Try out Deozaan's link, and if you can play it on your Mac, then you'll have the answer you and others have been looking for.

I think if folks are 100% confident that there's no malware in here, then I'd be interested in checking it out.

@Path: I never thought about it as Tic-Tac-Toe extreme. :) It's actually based on the Triple Triad card minigame from Final Fantasy 8.

@Chris: I feel 100% confident that the OSAKit SDK doesn't have any malware.

My AV only popped up on two of the game demos from their website, Deluxoid and Pharoah's Curse. Deluxoid wouldn't run at all because my AV would quarantine it before it finished loading. Pharoah's Curse played, but when I stopped it my AV popped up some more things. I feel 90% confident that this is just a false positive.

Either way, my AV didn't complain at all about the OSAKit SDK or the one I made myself, so even if the demos on the OSAKit website do have malware, I still feel 100% confident that there would be no malware if you use it for your own projects.

You should also be aware that OSAKit seems a bit unstable. Sometimes it doesn't actually close the game's process after you close the browser window, and I asked someone else to test out my HexCards game in OSAKit last night and it wouldn't run at all in Firefox for him, and when he loaded it up in IE it worked but locked up his computer.

So, after my short experience with it I'd say that it's a cool thing but your mileage may vary due to potential stability problems.

They've been around since '05 and the original coding for OSAKit was done by a TGE user.

Deozaan,

The problems you mentioned with IE and FF are exactly the problems I had with OSAKit v2 & v3(only on my laptop for v3).

I haven't had any trouble with v4 with these issues on either my PC Dell CPU or Dell laptop that I've tested it on.

1) Was it PC or Mac?

2) What kind of operating system?

3) Do they have the most recent version of that browser installed?

4) Do they have the most recent version of flash installed? (For some reason this improved things on a cpu I used to test v3)

I'm planning to have my first web game up soon using TGB & OSAkit and I'm interested in getting these bugs worked out. The developer has been more than happy to make improvements to serve TGB users.

There's a new option with v4 that you can have the game remove everything from the temp files as soon as the game is closed. Maybe this will solve your friends issues.

I am wondering would network play games work on this as well?

Yes, they should.

Here's a really old example of a networked FPS created by the original coder of the software, James Tadeo:

www.osakit.net/games.asp

Keep in mind this is a 2006 v1 of OSAKit that only supported IE. OSAKit's plugin is now up to v4 with multi browser compatibility.

Try out Deozaan's game after downloading the OSAKit plugin:

www.osakit.com/pages/downloads.php

Hexcards:

deozaan.com/games/torque/tgb/hexCards/HexCards.html

If you have issues playing Deozaan's HexCards game, post back about the system(plus type of cpu or laptop) & browser you were using.

I only have access to Dell & HP laptops and cpu's through work and my own to test out this plugin and how well it works with TGB.

OSAKit v4 is the result of a lot of TGB feedback about what does and doesn't work with their plugin.

First, Hello everyone!

I was reviewing my website stats and found this thread and thought I should post to clear some things up :

Quote:Here's a really old example of a networked FPS created by the original coder of the software, James Tadeo:
James is just an affiliate and a great friend and he is not the original coder of OSAKit. OSAKit is programmed from scratch by me (Maher F. Farag aka Sphinx of ancientsoft.com)

Quote:OSAKit did a big update recently to version 4.0, but I don't think they took the time to upgrade the games they have on their site which I recall being set up with version 2.0
That's true... it looks like that I should update my old sample and it should be done with the coming update of OSAKit.

OSAKit is 100% free of viruses, malware, spyware, adware or whatever and all alrams of some anti virus software are false positive!

Thanks everyone and sorry for posting too late :)

By the way I forgot to say that I am making a great discount for OSAKit, please http://www.osakit.com/pages/pro-version.php for more information!

@Maher

I know the OSAKit itself doesn't have any viruses in it, but one of the examples on your site definitely was/is compromised, I don't know if that's still the case. A while back, sometime around March or April I think, I was looking into the kit again and received what I assumed to be a false positive. A week later my machine was crippled from some seriously nasty trojans.

This isn't a knock against your kit, as I was impressed with what I did see of it. Just something that I figure you should be aware of if you weren't already.

Thanks Scott.

I have to update my old sample files as soon as possible!

Necro. Necro. Necrothread, Ho!

Has anyone that used the OSAKit successfully actually gotten to embed a Torque powered game within the browser using it? So far I've run tests with T3D 1.0, TGEA 1.8.1, and TGE 1.5.2. All of them have more or less worked except that the game just opens in new window as usual and not embedded in the browser.

Well I got it working. Thanks to Maher for the speedy support response. For those that come across this thread in the future the problem was I didn't set the WindowTitle property for OSA correctly. WindowTitle has to match exactly the title of your game's window, which is not the exe name by default.

This is dope. After I make my millions with iTGB Im hitting free internet games, or cheap ones anyway. That actually brings me to a thought that I never thought of. Cheap, .99 cent video games and up offered online. Obviously being done but never thought of it for me. Thanks TGB.
