March 09 Art Challenge - 50s Inspired Monster vs Scifi
by Logan Foster · in Artist Corner · 03/14/2009 (6:46 pm) · 16 replies
This have been a bit quiet lately with all the artists in the community, so Pascal Bos, Joe Maruschak and I have decided to try to spice things up by holding the first (of hopefully many) "Artist Challenge".
The goal of this challenge is to take a particular given subject and just produce some cool work with it to show off to your peers, and if possible your inspiration and workflow that you went through to do it.
There are no prizes, just the challenge of trying to use your abilities to work on something fun. Be it some sketches, concept art, 3D models, or whatever. Show off your best work with the subject idea that you have been given and let's see who can do some of the coolest and most inspirational work as commented on by your peers by making a post in the Artists Forums (or as a reply to this thread) with your work.
Our first challenge subject is going to be “1950’s Inspired Monsters: Horror vs Scifi”. This doesn’t mean you have to do a monster fighting a robot (though you can if you like), doing just a cool 50s inspired Monster or Robot is more along the lines of what the challenge is about.
Here are some references to give you guys some ideas or inspiration:
"Create from the Black Lagoon"
"The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms"
"The Day the Earth Stood Still"
Boris Karloff as Frankenstein (Ya I know its not the 50s but still its the idea that counts and hes probably the best Frankenstein ever).
Lost in Space Robot (not exactly 50s, but once again it shows off the logic and thinking of the era when it came to robots)
War of the Worlds (pre-spielberg and Orsen Wells flying saucer).
I hope that gives you guys some fun inspiration. Best of luck guys.

We will call it "as much as you can do by the month's end". Since it's a personal challenge so you are only cheating yourself if you don't put effort in and of course you won't get your peers cudos if you don't post early and post often with your work.

Dang those 1950s space monsters ... always after our earth women ... who always seem to be in their underwear ...

Soon as I have some free time (In the middle of moving) I'll see what I can come up with. :D

This is a WIP. Just a couple things made/added. Lots to do yet. I figured I'd give you a taste of what I'm doing.
Edit to add: This is about the best this Non Artist can do. :-D
I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with.
The last image is to give you an idea of scale.

Edit to add: Here is a video in action

Ok, I'll start the images with some programmer art. (that's the closest to art I can manage)

"THEM" ("make me a sergeant give me the booze");
"THE THING" (1950's vintage with James Arness "Matt Dillon" from Gunsmoke as the creature);
"IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE"
"INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS"
"DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS"
"INVADERS FROM MARS"
(let us not forget some of the famous monsters from "The Outer Limits" and "The Twilight Zone")
I'm a vintage sci-fi fan.

The B-9[LostInSpace] is one of my favorite robots...Warning, Warning! Sarcastic, empowered, must have been Bender's prototype!I have two on the 'Wall of Inspiration', retro and the remake, "Crush,Kill,Destroy"....

But I think it's a cool concept. Perhaps you could get some sponsors to donate prizes and re-introduce the "challenge" on a larger scale with a little more lead time - say quarterly? I'm sure the nice people at Garage Games could provide some sort of prize(s) (WE WANT A GG HOODIE), Gamesutra, or even other game companies might also have something to throw into the pot. The process gets easier once you have some sponsor on board.
@Dennis & Rex.... "Forbidden Planet"
The 1st movie incarnation of Robbie the robot? (If not, it's close). Also seems to nail down the Star Trek genre formula quite well.

Sadly, I don't have the time right now for a challenge, my regular schedule has been challenging enough!But I think it's a cool concept. Let me see what I can come up with. Does it have to be exact or can it be conceptual?

Oh my! How could I forget "Forbidden Planet"! Remember the monster in that one? ("Monsters of the id" as Morbius called them). An energy creature born from his own mind and empowered by the core of the planet.Let me see what I can come up with. Does it have to be exact or can it be conceptual?

Conceptual or even vaguely inspired is perfectly fine Dennis as long as it resembles that unique 50s look :)
