What Was the First Game to Make You Say 'WOW'?

I was just curious as to what was the first game that you laid eyes on, that made you either say "Wow", or that might have turned you into wanting to get into the game business (if it did or course:))?

The first game for me I think, was the first Metal Gear on the NES. I remember drooling over the comic book ad with my friends, showing all of the weapons you could use, and trying to visualize the microscopic game screens in that ad. When I got the game, it was probably one of the most original games I played at the time. You could really see they were really trying to push everything they could through that NES cartridge :)

Anyway, you got one??

The original Metal Gear was mind numbingly hard IMO.

I still liked it, but just about everything in that game killed you in no time.

Zelda for me, my dad got it for me for my birthday or something. I still remember beating it.

For me, it's a toss up between space invaders and pac-man. My dad used to own a candy-store when I was a kid and I spent way too many quarters on the games then. Even went so far as to pretend I was playing them on my Lite-Brite. Later on I started trying to program games on my PCjr in GW-Basic.

As a matter of fact, relating that kinda makes me feel old in here, and I'm only 28... :(

The first one that really made me go WOW was probably Matchday 2 on the Spectrum. After that, the next one was probably Castle Wolfenstein or Doom.

Zelda for the N64 blew me away. The one to make me get into game development was fairly recent, Red Faction (geomod is awesome IMO).

Well myself and my family went nuts over Woflenstein 3D. It was like a dream come true!

DooM made me go wow, but not as much, Quake was bigger in ways.

But wolfenstein 3D is the king! :-D.

I think the first game that I ever hacked on was The Castle of Dr. Brain... I found a dumper tool that would let me browse the data files that went with it. I had great fun doing that, seeing what went on behind the scenes...

Edit: Duh, DOOM. How could I forget it? But really, it was wolf3d. Such fun fiddling with the level editor in that game...

Doom was the first game that made me want to make new levels.... and so I did. Game editing/modifying became an addiction after that ;)

DUCK HUNT (Nintendo).

At the time, I hadn't really grasped how fun Mario was -- but I clearly remember being blown away by Duck Hunt. And that it CAME with that gun? Geez, it seemed way too good to be true. I remember thinking that I would have to save for years to afford one. Actually, MANY years, since at the time my allowance was 25 cents per week.

The next one was Chuck Yeager's Flight Simulator for the computer. I'm not that old, and we weren't early adopters, we were just WAY behind the curve tech-wise at the time. So that was my first 3D game at the time.

I made the switch straight from a DX2-66 at home and a P-133mhz at the Junior High to a BRAND new Pentium II computer, at the college labs, when I was 14. So I went directly from "Chuck Yeager's Flight Simulator" to "Starsiege: Tribes" -- the game that blew my mind and has still continues to do so.

And this will sound weird, but: Serious Sam. I mean, ALL OF THOSE GUYS, just POURING at you, filling the screen . . . it was SO insane. And when that dude showed up at the end? Just mind-blowing.

Great games all.

The first games that made me say "Wow" (don't know in which order I played that, so...) were:

// For soundtrack
- Shadow Of The Beast (Amiga - Psygnosis)
- Blood Money (Amiga - Psygnosis)
// For overall
- ProjectX (Amiga - Team17)
// For graphics
- Wolfenstein 3d (PC - Id Software)
- Half-life (PC - Valve)
- Unreal (PC - Epic)
- R-Type (Spectrum - Team 5 or something like that)
