"By Slope", "By Height", etc...

Hello all..
I'm posting here wondering if I'm losing my mind.
Some time back, in an earlier version of TGE (pre-TGEA), I was experimenting with the texture placement options, using "By Slope", "By Height" and so forth. Back then, I remember the options working pretty much the way I expected them to, and adjusting the "spline points" for each would yield the desired results.
I'm currently doing the same, working with the newer MegaTerrain (not Atlas) version and am finding that I'm not getting anything close to the results that I was once able to get.
The engine/editor seems to be completely ignoring the settings most of the time.
Before I go any further, the following results occur whether I have Fractal Displacement checked or unchecked, so I'm not seeing the effects of that at work; that's one of the first things I considered.
For example.. I just tried to have a rock texture applied only to steeper surfaces. However, no matter how I adjusted the settings, it would either cover everything, including flat surfaces, or it wouldn't cover anything at all. I could not get it to only cover steep surfaces as I wanted it to.
Similarly, I'm having trouble with the "by height" settings as well. It's placing a texture at either all heights or not at all.. or, seemingly randomly.
I went through every iteration of trying to figure it out myself that I could. Then I looked for documentation on how it works, thinking perhaps it had been changed. I've been unable to find any documentation on working with those specific settings anywhere.. I searched in the documentation, searched the forums, etc.
So, I'm wondering if someone could light a torch for me here and help me out with why the texture placement settings aren't working correctly... or at least not as I remember them working?
