Torque 3D - for Mac?

by Ms Mooshoo · in Collada Test · 02/18/2009 (10:54 am) · 13 replies

Hello. Is there any info on if the release of Torque 3D will also be for the Mac platform? Any idea on the approximate release date? weeks? months? years? Thank you!

I can't comment officially, since i don't work here, but the general consensus so far has been "months". I am assuming they will also release it on the Mac, that was one of the big things for 1.8.

well as T3D is based off of TGEA i would think they could add mac support. it would still take allot of work though he only thing how many mac's are going to be out there that can run T3D anyway. :P i think that is the real question in there minds.

@Brandon

Many people use Mac for Torque, mostly because it is rare to find a good engine with OpenGL support. They know that they would lose many customers if they just dropped that support, and they would have wasted alot of work on 1.8.

@Matthew - That would be a welcome change, but GG has been saying the same thing for a long time now, so I'll believe it when I see it. Mac support to date has been, to put it bluntly, half-baked at best. There's no game pad support in TGE or TGB. User preferences and log files in TGE are stored inside the .app bundle. The latest version of Constructor is still not available for Mac.

In short, don't tell me how important Mac support is to GG. Show me. Fix the Mac support in your current lineup before you ask for more of my money.

"In short, don't tell me how important Mac support is to GG."

That idea is definitely one I support, which is why you don't see me touting feature promises and keeping my statements simple. I'd rather demonstrate in action than in words :)

"Show me. Fix the Mac support in your current lineup before you ask for more of my money. "

Now we may agree on the previous though we do disagree on how to show it. I think with TGEA 1.8 & 1.8.1 we showed that it was important. Especially since we supported mac in those version before Torque 3D. Hopefully we can show you even more in Torque 3D, but again I don't like to talk the talk, I'd rather walk the walk :)

@Matthew - Okay, I downloaded the Forge demo of TGEA 1.8.1 and had a look. It wrote its log file in the same directory as the .app bundle, and prefs.cs in the common/ subdirectory. I suspect that if I modded the demo to look for gamepad support, I'd find that to still be missing too.

What that shows me is that GG thinks the iPhone is important, and put a lot of effort into supporting OpenGL for that reason. The Mac version of TGEA looks to me like an offshoot of that work - it's been tweaked just enough to get it running on the Mac, but nothing has been done to fix the bugs and omissions that have plagued the Mac versions of Torque from the beginning.

And I do consider these to be bugs, not features. Lack of gamepad support in TGB is absurd - would you consider playing a 2d game like Robotron 2048 using a keyboard? Writing the log and preferences next to or inside the .app bundle means that end users who drop the game into /Applications must then be logged in as an admin user to play it.

I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant. Consider it a sign of my dedication, if you will - if I didn't care about Torque and want to see GG do well, I'd have simply moved on to another engine instead of complaining and trying to get things fixed.

Let me end this on a positive note, with an offer. What can I do to help? I have an Xcode, and I'm not afraid to use it.

@Sherman: If you are interested in helping with testing and debugging Torque 3D on a Mac, talk to Ken Holst (kenh@garagegames.com). He selects and runs the quality assurance on all our engines, and he often asks community members for help. He can look at your GG.com profile and see if you're a good candidate for being part of his beta testing e-mail list.

What about Linux, Is there any plan to release Torque 3D for Linux. TGE was supporting to Linux as well but TGEA was not so I didn't understand why just Mac supported with TGEA 1.8 Mac and Linux are very close OS and I think GG should continue to Support Linux but I know, In a business stand point it might not be good as A Mac platform. However, TGE was the fist affordable commercial Game development Engine and When I was searching Game Engine as a platform that features got my attention.

Any Linux ports will be community supported like they are with the other engines.
