So if I'm in the base folder, contents being engine, tgb, games, tools, and documentation:
tar -cvfzp iTGB_1_2.tgz
Should work? I'm getting a strange error from that: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive....

I definitely want to preserver permissions, as a certain files need to be read/write or there will be a crash. So if I'm in the base folder, contents being engine, tgb, games, tools, and documentation:
tar -cvfzp iTGB_1_2.tgz

make sure you specify star at the end, that says what to put in it.
tar <options> <tar filename> <pattern of things to include>

cd to the directory, "tar zcvpf archive.tgz ." - note the period, which means "current directory and down". Star works, too, but it's not The Way of The Beard ;)

For ease of terminaling, I've installed Visor+SIMBL, with Visor bound to ctrl+esc. Use it, and be addicted :)
Good call on separating the docs. Perhaps you should even distribute source and editors separately? A DMG with TGB built to defaults+debug. Ask me about tools on IRC.
