Top 5. Hmm..so many to choose from. Try this on for size:

1. Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2)
2. Final Fantasy 6 (SNES/PSX)
3. Metal Gear Solid (PSX)
4. Half Life (PC)
5. Final Fantasy 7 (PSX)

1,237,392. Halo
1,237,393. Unreal Tournament (all of them)
1,237,394. Quake (any of them..who cares?)

How about that...Halo is better than UT and Quake in my list! Just goes to show you..3 of the "Graphical Bosses" are dead last. I just hope Doom3 doesn't succumb to the same stupid bull&*$@ that it's brethren did.

Nice topic! I bet this one will stay on the most recent 5 list for a little while.

mmmmmmm, good thread :)

1 - Deus Ex (amazingly hooking storyline)

2 - Virtua Tennis (the best play-before&after-the-pub-game and best arcade action there is)

3 - Final Fantasy 7 (best story of the lot of them, FFX was just poo on the PS2)

4 - Championship Manager (grrrr, should be number one because its soo addictive. Can't beat being in the 30th season with Celtic)

5 - Speedball 2 (on the megadrive, great fun)

6 - Desert Strike (was actually sick because I wanted to play this game more, totally original)

7 - Soldier of Fortune 2 (great for multiplayer matches with about 20 other people)

8 - Shogun:Total War (pretty original implementation of a classic gameplay type)

9 - MS Train Simulator (original and strangely addictive, still haven't figured out why though)

10 - Any EA John Madden/NHL/NBA game after 92 on the megadrive/PS2/PC (great fun)

So many more but only room for 10, Its Only Rock and Roll on the spectrum had to be the best & most addictive game made in BASIC though :)

Well, here goes - my list tends towards the RTS type games - I lovem... if there was a Game that combined that with a MMORPG in a persistent world would be my ideal game - anyhow :

1) Cossacks - wow... great game, set in the period I like to play in. Very ordered with tactical elements - specially if you're like me with a few friends who don't mind sitting and building up their armies for 2 hours before the battles begin on an epic scale.

2) AOK - my first RTS love, great game, but dwarfed by Cossacks. Loved the tactical elements and having to have the right number of workers vs. soldiers.

3) Settlers 2 <- the two is very important there. This game was amazing, I can remember playing this all the way through a day and night with a mate (they had two players on the same computer - split screen) during a school holidays once.. amazing.

4) Close Combat (2)- A Bridge Too Far - Another classic game - I liked the capaign style of the battles - once again a great game to play against friends (you'll notice that most of the games I play are all multiplayer, which is generally why I play them.)

5) Golden Eye - Another classic game - four people around one console (not an amazing concept now... but I still love that game.)

Now the next few games come in no particular order :

Everquest - Great game, until you get tired of camping spawns.... had me playing for two months.

Anarchy Online - much better than EQ... I think they reduced the game play by adding in their 'land control'. Still, it is an excellent concept of a game.

Dungeon Siege - Loved the game, played it from start to finish pretty much without stopping - however, it didn't take long enough ;) Had some excellent RPG ideas in it.

MOHAA - Great game, the addons don't add much, but I really did like the first one (once I got to Level three... you'd know why if you had played it.)

Chuckie Egg - This is the one game that hooked me to computer games, maybe sad... but I was five years old... and the whole family sat around and played. Excellent game :) The whole big hen thing.. amazing :)

Sim City - Another excellent game - I liked the first one best.

Populas - Wow.. another RTS - great game.. never did play against anyone else though :/

Well, I think that's it from my personel favourites... there are a lot lot more that I have played and loved - but those ones are the ones I have played the most.

1. GTA 3 (PC) soo much better then PSX (IMHO)
2. Starcraft (POWER OVERWHELMING)
3. Fallout 2 (my fav RPG)
5. Mafia (OMG, just a wonderful experiance)
6. UT2003 (I know theres nothing new here but arena combat refined to perfection)
7. Super Metroid (SNES)
8. Deus Ex (it was good, but not the best)
9. Leiro - the best for parties :)
10. The Fight of the Sumo-Hoppers - This is rather fun with a friend, better when REALLY tired/drunk - do a search ;)

The last 2 are freeware and the rest (cept no. 7) are all on PC 'cause i absolutely hate consoles (well ever since the SNES, it rocked);) They steal all the best talent from the PC market... I vow never to work on a console game.

There are soo many more... this list changes VERY frequently as I re/discover games.

IMHO almost all of the postings so far have concentrated on very recent games. I refuse to believe that, but then again there were no clear criteria. But if I look back on the past three or four years, I see no "killer games". Not a single.

Here's a list of games (no specific order) that I know must have been incredible, because they made me play day and night, and sometimes forget which is which:

* nethack
* elite
* wing commander (the first)
* masters of orion 2
* neuromancer
* wasteland

(hm, Wasteland was 1989 and Elite 1987. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur?)

2. GTA 3
3. Baldur's Gate 2
4. Devil May Cry
5. Icewind Dale

I haven't played Halo yet so I can't rate it.

My favorite games:

1. HALO
2. Rogue Spear
3. Splinter Cell
4. Tribes 2
5. Empire Earth

I like FPS and RTS. I read most of you dont like HALO, well, I thought it was a great game, depite the cut and paste levels. I guess it just really depends on your interests

My favorite games are:
1) Descent2 (ohh how I miss it, if only there was a Win2k port)
2) Tribes (The first one, the only game of it's kind until...)
3) Tribes 2 (The best remake of Tribes, except it lacks many different objects for like building and such compared to the first one)
4) Quake 2 (I love playing this on my linux machines at LAN parties)
5) Half-Life (it was pretty cool back in the day ;)

2. Tekken 3
3. Golden Eye
4. Worms
5. Rainbow Six

1. Tribes & Tribes 2 (No other games keep calling me back like these do)

2. NFL FEVER 2003 (It rocks online)

3. Madden 92 & 93 (Never the same after those)

4. Halo (Multiplayer is cool even with its annoying problems, like the spawning)

5. Ghost Recon

Splinter Cell may knock someone off this list. I only played the demo (about 50 times :) ) We will see when I get it.

lets see... B)

1.- Vaxia (heheh)
2.- Duke Nukem 3D. I felt just primal happiness in the shoes of that tough guy.
3.- Secret of Mana. Oldie, but it made me feel the story. That counts a lot.
4.- Starcraft.. yeah. Great story... kept thinking about it. Pulled the strategist out of me, for whatever was worth. I hate Kerrigan.
5.- Unreal Tournament. Just good basic fun, blowing people up.

fun thread B)

Well, there are a couple of games that I find myself going back to time and time again.

1. Ultima 7 part 1/2 (I loved the previous Ultima's, but this one was the cream of the crop, IMO).
2. Space Quest (The original Roger Wilco rocked).
3. Guilty Gear X (I love the system and the animation). I'm also particularly fond of the vs games, Samurai Shodown/Spirits, and KOF games.
4/5. Ikaruga or Raidant Silvergun (two of the best games ever).
6. Jet Grind Radio (I love the Dreamcast version more than the XBox remake because of the difficulty level, but I can play this game over and over again).
7. Challenge of the Five Realms (great RPG that a lot of people forget about).
8. Half-Life (I didn't enjoy FPS's before this game...now you can't get me away from them).
9. Persona 2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment (though I like the systems of the true SMT games more, I enjoyed the story and the characters of the Personas greatly).
10. Gran Turismo (the entire series is a constant fun driving sim...except I hated all the bugs in 2...like the garage bug...or the "kill your dual-shock" bug...).
