Windows 7 beta; my images aren't loading

(GG updated right when I submitted this, and I lost everything I typed. X| )
During my free-block in high school, I hang out in a software development class so I can test my game's compatibility and performance on pcs, A copy of the Windows 7 beta was installed on one of the custom built machines, so I played around with it.
Windows 7 is a huge improvement over Vista and Xp in performance (among other things). Worried about compatibility, I tested my Asteroids game I'm working on in TGB on the machine. The splash screen and background images failed to load, and the game ran very slowly.
I've had this problem before. It seems that if an image is too large, winpcs and older, slower macs would either crash (pc) or the images wouldn't load and the game would run slowly (macs). I fixed this by changing the image size from 1000x1000+ to 500x500.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has tried the beta and ran into any problems with their projects. I'm hoping my problem will go away as Windows 7 matures, because I don't feel like lowering the quality of my games to support Microsoft's most advanced OS. :/
