New GarageGames.com Feedback

by Deborah M. Fike · in Site Feedback · 01/13/2009 (6:25 pm) · 242 replies

Hello all,

Welcome to the new site. We know there's a lot of new stuff to check out, and things are a bit different than they used to be (mostly for the better). Please post your thoughts on the website on this thread. We'll cull through them over the next few weeks and put it in the priority stack to fix in future iterations of the site.

1. Email Notifications is still shaky.
- The Sender is seen as "Apache"
- No url to the post.
- Sent as Text (so Html tags is not working)

not sure if this one has been mentioned already:

* forum threads do not get implicitly marked as read.
on the unread threads page, if i visit a given thread and then return the the unread threads page, the thread i just read is still there.

To everyone:

Members of GG (myself and Ken Holst) are indeed following this thread. We're logging all you say into our project management software, and our plan is to continue to have weekly site updates with blogs, much like we executed last week, until the vast majority of these issues are resolved.

So does that mean we will see the Dev snapshots returned ?

Oh, Also talk about bad time, you guys got a full feature on the Electric Playground With the showcasing of Instant Action as well as the GG site, this occured on the same night as the big website switch, even though the show showed the old one. Thought id mention that. First Impressions are always the important one.

@Edward: Probably not. We want people to just create awesome blogs and then make them a "Featured Blog" on the What's New page. Obviously, that page will get a design pass so it's more eye-catching like the old snapshots. :)

If you create a blog that you think is "feature" worthy, feel free to ping me directly and I'll look it over: deborahm@garagegames.com.

hey Deborah,
fwiw i emailed you as "deborahm@gargegames.com" on wednesday last week, and the mail bounced. gmail tried to deliver it a few times, and finally gave up on saturday with:
--------------------------------
Technical details of permanent failure:
The recipient server did not accept our requests to connect. Learn more at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=7720
[gargegames.com (1): Connection refused]
--------------------------------

this is gmail as an SMTP host via thunderbird.

i had a similar thing with a couple other GG email addresses.
i successfully emailed you in the past tho,
so i wonder if it's related to the site change.

i'll send a test email.

@Orion: Our e-mail system is based on Gmail and is completely separate from our website. If there's an issue here, it's not website related, and we'll have to talk with Google.

I just sent you an e-mail to see if you're receiving anything...but I haven't gotten anything from you yet.

ouch, this is not easy to browse nor utilize, I am glad so many people like it, cause I hate it.

there is no clean simple route of access, everything is convoluted to get to.

it seems the navigation portion was forgotten and someone spent too much time trying to make it pretty.

nice tech tho, but the layout is very confining.

Getting used to the colour scheme now ..... (still think it needs tweaking a bit but hey ...)

More sub-sections in the forums would be good.

Everything else seems okay. Search is much improved.

edit: Most recent blog doesn't show up on the "recent blogs" list when viewing one of that user's blogs.

Looks like the Watched Threads still needs some love. My old watch list is back, but apparently the list is limited to displaying 10 threads. They don't seem to be in any discernible order or very recent.

Forum searching unusable:

Although I can see the TGE forums, I can't get access to most of the things I'm searching for, or even to most of my own historical posts which were in the TGE forums. Nearly every link tells me I have no access to that forum. Also there's no indication what forum a link belongs to, so I can't tell what forum I have no access to. It also seems that "All Documents" is the only search option that actually returns anything.

I know how disheartening it is to put a load of effort into something new and then get flamed by your community for it. It has happened to me a few times. But you're going to start losing customers fast if you don't sort this thing out.

Note: So I don't know if this works for everyone (having a TDN problem), but I thought I couldn't get to the RTS Kit pages (even though I own the product), but I just found out, that I can get to the pages, just not the main page. It locks me out from there, but I can get to individual things like RTS AI Path finding, or World Domination mod, etc.

Ok, TDN says I do not own the RTS Starter kit or the Adventure kit so I can not access the docs. I own both.

@Michael

Try this: tdn.garagegames.com/wiki/RTSStarterKit/WorldDomination

Can you go there, cause I can't go to the TDN launch page for RTS Starter Kit either, but I think the other pages that I should be locked out of from (that also require RTS Starter Kit authorization) I can get to.

I just purchased the SSAO Kit and there is no support links for it.
I had to dig in the forums for the maker's website.
They are selling it cheaper than GG.
I am not upset but I just wanted to point it out.
Anyway I was having difficulties getting the kit to work.
I will redirect my efforts to the site I found.

Perhaps I can get it working after reading others issues.

Feature request: Sticky Forum Topics

Allow helpful and important posts to stay at the top of a particular forum topic. This will help lazy people who post asking the same questions that have been answered numerous times and didnt bothing to search first.

(Just like I didnt bother to see if someone else already suggested this.)

Sticky topics could also direct users to Documentation links, TDN or collections of other helpful forum posts.

It's not so much just lazy people anymore as I can search for for a post or resource that was posted this past week and instead it now pulls info from 2002 and chooses to display that instead. The whole site is a cluster**** now. try to post a resource it ends up as a blog try to buy something get application error and 2-3 charges to your credit card. Try to search and get a completely randomly sorted mess of post that in no way relate to what you were looking for. Try to cancel some old watched post and the checkbox is greyed out.

Hopefully this disaster will be sorted out in a few weeks.

@Matt Summers: We actually do have stickies in our forums. We just haven't gotten around to using them a bunch yet, but you can see it here.

@Orion: Did you ever resend your e-mails? I did receive your first mail when we were working on this Tuesday. Just want to make sure you hadn't e-mailed me again...
