Vertical Pathfinding

I am not sure I am going to explain my question properly.

I am working on a superhero game where rts units can fly or travel from roof to roof or even climb up buildings. How would I go about setting up a vertical pathfinding system?

maybe you can use a normal A* pathfinding and change the Z of the rtsunit for simulating that is flying...
