Whats going on?

Hi Guys,

It would be great to hear about some of the projects going on with CSK. I have been working on a couple of games since we released this kit. I managed to implement some ai players and make a few battle missions. I think adding area impuls back to the game makes a ton of difference. The explosions really send bodies flying.

I had a few lan-party demo game/projects going a couple months ago, but I've been busy on other things recently.

One project became a Civil war era wargame. It had five battlefields with real terrain data from around Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. The soldiers were mounted horse troopers with rifles and sabers, and that was great fun, but the melee controls on horseback never worked out the way I wanted. I ended up using the turret code to let you take control of cannons and other field artillery, and as a joke we had a horse drawn carriage with a cannon mounted on it that could also carry 6 troopers in it - 1 driver, 1 cannoneer, 4 passengers - and the passengers could freely use their weapons also. A friend of mine owned a cyber cafe and this actually became a requested lan-game, I even had some college kids willing to buy copies of the demo/prototype.

I dislike modern day war games, so my next little lan-party project was a Tribes-like sci-fi battlefield game, but this was more of a playground than a serious attempt at a game. Introduced a jet pack and drop ship spawns that spawned you inside a dropship as it fell out of the sky. The dropship broke apart about 300 meters above the ground and you jetted or parachuted the rest of the way. I also had some cobbled together deployable code that in combination with the kit's prefab buildings allowed an engineer/builder to build bases that slowly faded in piece by piece like they were actually being built. This was also about the time I started working with Apparatus on the Kaboom! content pack so I ended up making everything in the game destroyable. Every object or item and all of the wreckage, rubble, and debris got treated as rigidshapes.

And you're not kidding about the area impulses! But explosions can send more than just vehicles and bodies flying. It was great fun blowing things up and trying to guess where the pieces would land at: "I bet I could land this radar in that tree over there."

Never did try any AI though and I ended up setting the kit aside once I dove into TGEa in earnest. On a side note, I did have the Modernization Kit working with the CSK.

I am just playing with it now, trying to get the engine and the CSK to my liking, I have started on it, but I do not really want to release anything yet untill I get a more solid thing going

I actually have plans to release "something" this Spring 2009 (takes a while with kids and wife - ahthough my wife will shoot me if I dont produce a product to market by then). Not going to divulge the nature of the game. It is a FPS. However, it is only part of the game. The other part is the value added, which might be usuable to the US Government to some extent.

I have some idea of what servers i will be renting. I have a tshirt design drawn up for advertisement at conferences I usually attend. I asked for more of the source art, because I want to keep the characters and equipment, more genuine United States Military look. I might end up buying US soldier art though, since am no artist, and have very little brain horsepower when it comes to using milkshape/blender/constructor - and too cheap and poor to buy the high end drawing tools.

CSK has some of the features i didnt want to implement - CTF, helicopters, jeeps. CSK was also a great "tutorial" on Torque scripting....

Twilight Wars will be based on the CSK. I am toying with the idea of porting the CSK to TGEA in order to do this ... but for now the initial prototype will be done on TGE.

I will be using extra content packs like the Tank Pack, Humvee Pack, Stryker Pack and will be removing air vehicles from the game. I will also be using all the modern weapon packs and a whole bunch of building content packs including the city pack from 3DRT.

All these will be run via a master server at Gobbo Games and there will be various weapon unlocks etc. The game will be released for free and the idea is to try and get a similar play style to the Battlefield series of games.

Basically I want to create a decent FPS that doesn't have some of the flaws of Battlefield 2 and hopefully get some outside interest in Gobbo Games. Most of my time at the moment has been spent on documentation and getting the artwork and models ready for inclusion. The basic User Interface is done (did this a while ago) and just needs to be moved into the CSK. I am kinda holding out for 1.0.3 and maybe the release of the CSK on TGEA ... but if not I will be starting the full game project within the next two weeks.

Welllll..... Probably not for a while. As difficult this is to port to tgea (I've been working on a port for around 6 months now), It's hard to say. The difficulty lies in uncommented code. I think I've found it all now, so tgea port should be along sometime in the next 5-6 months. (at the pace I'm going)
(( btw, just kidding about another 5-6 months))
