ArtWeaver - Open Source

by Steve Acaster · in Artist Corner · 09/26/2008 (6:55 pm) · 5 replies

Just stumbled across a free, open source, do-as-you-will-license graphics program.

It's a bit like Gimp but with more of an emphasis on simulating natural art styles (paint, charcoal, chalks, pastels, pens, etc).

In that respect it's more of a freeware clone of PainterX than Photoshop (it can do textured brushstrokes).

Too bad it is not for Mac.

But it's open source, so you can port it to mac quickly.

It has a SDK, though I didn't see the source availability. But even if it were, it may be built on MFC or some such technology that makes porting almost nastier than building the app from scratch on a different platform.

Good find, Steve!

ArtWeaver is now open source? that's new.

It's always been free, but not open source afaik

Where do you see it as Open Source?
www.artweaver.de/ has downloads but no source

is it on sourceforge?

It *IS* a marvelous program, and Irfanview recognizes its image format too, and he (Boris Eyrichthe author) has done great things to open ArtWeaver to other applications. For example, a plugin to Project Dogwaffle and PD Particles to exchange images directly without saving to files, including the amlpha channel masks. Also, he's implemented the gluas filtering LUA scripting feature as seen in GIMP and also the GUISERVER extensions for LUA, as seen in Dogwaffle. This allows everyone to use filters from GIMP which are written in Lua to use them also in ArtWeaver, as well as in Pixarrara Twistedbrush and Dogwaffle.

If you use PD Particles (available here at GG) be sure to grab the latest 1.1 update patch, and then check the Artweaver connection at www.thebest3d.com/artweaver

Looks like the Open Source feature relates to plugins only.

From a review site-
Quote:
It does proclaim (loudly, which is where you likely got the idea that it was open source in its entirety) to use open source Pascal based plugins, which is kind of nice, but the application itself does not appear to have any license information, the ability to download the source, GNU GPL compatibility information or any other indication that it's open source.

There is an SDK link www.artweaver.de/index.php?id=63,146,0,0,1,0
