Jack Thompson Disbarred For Life

by Michael Perry · in General Discussion · 09/25/2008 (10:20 am) · 10 replies

I normally do not post anything that is not Torque or GG related. However, I've been following the career, downfall, disbarment trial, and punishment of one Mr. John Bruce Thompson.

After being found guilty, the final decision has been passed down: Jack Thompson Permanently Disbarred. If you go through the GamePolitics.com site, you can read the exclusive coverage of the events that led up to the trial, the trial transcripts, and the judgment.

I know it is difficult to remain civil when the topic of Mr. Thompson is brought up, but please remember to adhere to GG forum policy. That being said: fan-frikkin-tastic news! Being a Florida resident, I know quite a bit about this person. I've heard stories of his conduct outside of what most of you know. In my opinion, he is an awful human being who thrives on being opportunistic and vitriolic. If you knew some of the things he has done not related to gaming censorship, you would agree.

While I'm very glad this finally came to pass, I'm kinda wary about who the censor nuts will find to replace him as their champion.

While a valid concern, keep in mind that no one championed this man. In fact, a frequent critic of violent media, National Institute on Media and the Family, distanced themselves from this man due to his ludicrous remarks and blatant lies.

The only people that supported him were those who did not know him. Once they became aware of his reputation and personality, they quickly dropped their support.

I'm not worried. What this means is that Florida tax payer money will no longer be wasted on this man. That, and the fact that anyone who debates him (like Hal Hapin) have the mother of all trump cards to use.

Whacko Jacko Disbarred =
This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

The link doesn't work, so I can't even find out who it is you are talking about or why this is such great news.
I did try going directly to the site, but couldn't get that to load eather, so would you please humor me and tell me who this guy is?

@Mike, give it a bit, I believe the site is being hit by Digg.

Here's a quick run down: Jack "Whacko Jacko" Thompson is a crazy (ex-)lawyer that brought all sorts of equally crazy/frivolous lawsuits against games companies and players for any number of things (he was also largely behind persecution of Rockstar for the "Hot Coffee" debacle). That all inn addition to a number of other outlandish/annoying stunts he pulled, such as constantly (and with poor grammar/spelling) harassing people who were known in the games industry (Penny-Arcade for example). There's a whole huge list of other stuff he's done, which was either just very despicable or outright illegal.

Thanks Orion. Now I know who that idiot....errm...I mean jerk...errm..actually I meant to say moron is. Yes, this is good news. Hope he's disbarred from ever uttering another word from his mouth again, with severe civil and criminal penalties.
GamePolitics.com must be getting slammed with people trying to get on. Just to make sure I had the address correct, I googled it and followed the link there. No go. Can't get on. Mabe later on in the week.

Edit: hehe, you two posted while I was posting. Thanks for the info.

Search Wikipedia for the name for a full explanation, but the short is this.
He's a Florida attorney who has an obsession with destroying video games. He has sued Rockstar over grand theft auto and bully multiple times, trying to get the games outlawed and removed from the shelves.
He attacks any person or group who speaks ill of him. Even attempting to get the florida bar association disbanded.

One memorable bit of history is when he released a statement offering a large donation to a charity of choice if a game was made for him centered on a character who lost his son to violence sparked by a video game, and then went on a rampage through E3 killing every big name developer in the place. Someone ended up making the game, following his design to the letter. He backed out saying it wasn't serious, so the guys behind penny arcade pony'd up the donation themselves.

He's a terrible person who feeds on controversy to gain fame for himself, and needs professional psychiatric help.

And again, I'm afraid that now he's gone a new "champion of morality" will spring up, one more effective than he...
