Shaders in 2D?

Does the 2D side of things support shaders (.fx files)?

If so, are there any tutorials on how to get the files loaded? I've seen them in the FPS 3D demo (still trying to figure out how they are loaded and used).

What I am trying to do is render a Mandelbrot fractal as a scene background using a shader.

I'm familiar with Torque products but new to TorqueX.
