Platformer Starter Kit Update

Hi Guys,

I would just like to give you all a quick update regarding how the further development of the Platformer Starter Kit has been going. You may have read over my blog regarding networking the kit. I am still working on it, but I have been improving other areas of the kit, such as efficiency and general house-keeping.

One of the problems that I have been facing with networking, has been the lack of a real-time network system for TGB. I had set up a system where I could get smooth movement between clients where latency was next to nill. But as soon as there was any distinction between clients, the whole thing would fall to crap. For a long time, I tried to think of an appropraite solution to this problem, but in the end I came to the conclusion that it could not be done with TGB's current networking support.

Warning: Don't give up hope just yet ;)

What I would like to do now is use my spare time to focus on areas that you all want developed further. I understand that you guys are kean and eager to develop your own ideas and modifications (I have already received a few extensions from people), but I am always willing to help out whenever possible. There is also the possibility of having some of those extensions added to the PSK as well!

Also, if you have been making cool games or levels with the PSK, please post them here! I have already seen some work from you, but we need more!

Hello there, Phillip...

any aproximate date on when will it be released? i'd like to see the improvements you've done with it... funny thing is, i bought this like 2 months ago, expanded the level that comes with it, and, since i was workin on another TGB project, i had to leave it for awhile, now im thinkin on commin back, but i think i'd like to wait till you release the update pack...

I really cannot say for certain, but I think that it will have to wait until the next TGB release. I have made quite a few optimisation improvements to the PSK (as well as a few features and tidy-ups), but there are modifications needed to be made to the engine to support it (at this stage). I will continue to work on it and improve it's functionality.

If there is anything that you would like me to address in the interim then I would be more than happy to oblige.

For beginners like me, I think a complete platformer tutorial (Startscreen, load / save, highscore list, Finish) would be awesome. :o) But I guess nobody got that much spare time to create something like that.

Andre, I'm in the middle of putting all those pieces together. I'll try and post something to TDN to help others add features to the platform SDK.
