Install failure

by Danny Mejia · in Torque X Platformer Kit · 06/06/2008 (11:54 am) · 15 replies

Greetings.
I have torquex, visual studio 2005 pro, and xna 2.0 installed.
I have been learning the torquex builder 2d for about a week now.

So, my boss had me (try) to install the platformer kit.
After it complained that it needed visual c# 2005 express edition for some reason, I installed it alongside pro.
Why it would need the stripped down free version is a mystery to me...
So, now when I try to go to "create new platformerdemo", it fails to create the new project "This project type is not supported by this installation", in regards to Game.csproj, and leaves some empty directories.

Following the same logic of having to downgrade my ide, I also downgraded to xna 1.0.
Still fails.

The platformer kit does not support XNA 2.0. I didn't think that the installer expected a prior version, though.

I'm also having trouble installing, probably because I'm an idiot.

When I'm in visual studio 2005 with xna studio 2.0 I can see the platformer from my installed templates, but I get an error when launching them.

So then I installed visual studio 2008 so I could get xna studio 3.0, but I can't launch the platformer from there...

I guess my question is, what exactly do I need (in terms of visual studio and xna studio) installed to ues the platformer starter kit?

I had thought it needed to have torque x installed (am i wrong?) which required visual studio 2005 and xna studio 2, which is why i installed those first. Any help would be great.

XNA 2.0 and TX 2.0 do not support Visual Studio 2008. Both XNA 2.0 and TX 2.0 are required for the 2.0.0 version of the Platformer Kit. You can use Visual Studio 2005 with 2.0 projects.

How exactly do I get old version of Visual c# 2005?

Microsoft has unfortunately removed VS2005 Express editions from their website. I'm not sure if there is another site somewhere that perhaps hosted the files.

@Wicked

Here's one thread about this www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/88497.

I think all you need is the installer file for VS as it downloads everything during the install.

Thanks Sean and Kenneth

I managed to find the installers from Microsoft site by google search, but then had to install xna 2 again which needed sp1 of Visual # 2005.

Now everything is installed and running, except I cannot seem to figure out where exactly is the platformer project. I cannot seem to find the files directory.

Any idea or did something went wrong while installing?

@Wicked

Just so I know we're coming from the same place, your install process should be this:

1. VS2005
2. XNA Game Studio 2
3. Torque X 2
4. Platformer Starter Kit 2

Assuming all that, if you create a Platformer Demo project the source for the PSK will be in the project you just created.

Figured it out.

Thanks Sean

need to create a new project and select PSK as a template.

Hopefully this graphic problem has been solved. Do you have any idea regarding this -

Well last time only the slopes were missing this time the game is not loading at all.

Has anyone else experienced this error?

What is your graphics card?

It is Mobile 945GM chipset

My laptop cannot be upgraded with graphic card but my pc can be, so let me know which graphic card will work.

Last time atleast the games were working, even if the slopes were invisible, instead of fixing they have just made it even more graphic demanding.

TGB runs well but then to use it, I will have to buy its PSK kit, without the guarantee that I will be able to actually complete a game in it, keeping in mind all the issues it has.

Someone had a similar issue with tilemaps. Do a search for "tilemaps" and you should find it. As I recall this person was using a netbook with an integrated GPU and it couldn't handle tilemaps
