On closer inspection, I also saw they used a screen shake which helps add drama to the explosion. I would think some AFX work (like a massive expanding shockwave on the ground) would really add to the eye candy, but as far as creating a real mushroom cloud...well, I'm stumped. I know it can be done with particles if you have the right algorithm or patients to use multiple emitters.

2 years later this guy has pulled the same routine with me. Instead of replying in this thread, he directly messaged me on AIM. I spent nearly an hour helping him figure out how to use a compiler and integrate a resource. He was very difficult to deal with, but I'm always happy to help a community member out.
However, once I finished he continuously bombarded me with IMs to help him figure out how to make his game instead of using the forums and Google. After 3 days of non-stop messaging and making inappropriate comments, I informed him that I'd appreciate it if he did not spam me.
I told him I'm insanely busy, and would prefer if he only message me or e-mail me with new questions that were general and not specific to his game. He freaked out and I was forced to block him on AIM and e-mail.
He is young, a bit out of his depth, and seriously needs to learn boundaries. Help at your own risk.

Just a warning but this guy has been IMing random people requesting help with building a video game. He's 15 or so. We've tried to be nice but he keeps demanding help and is unrealistic in thinking he can build a game in a day or two. I've added him to my 'blocked' list after several spams and so have a few others in the community.

Interesting thread.

The speed of the explosion, size of particles, wind on ground, and sound really sell it.
