Human Texture Work Questions

So i'v been doing alot of work with interrior designs and inanimate objects in constructor and 3DS Max. And recently I have been trying my hand at human model design. I have managed to put together what I think is a decent human shaped model (after using the smooth tool, lol). And before I go to far into something i'm not used to yet and animate it, I wanted to try adding textures first. (Probally would be better off being done this order anyways.) So what I was wondering is does anyone out there have any tips or an explanation on how I should do the texture work? Should I make the head a seperate texture from the body, etc.? And how would the head be done. In the past when I did inanimate objects and simple interriors it was just selected a polygons face and slapping the texture on. In 3DS Max, most of my objects were of a single color (ex. My most recent was a blacksmiths anvil which was all 1 color; black.) So I don't know much when it comes to wrapping a texture around a model that requires different texture work in certain areas. So any tips, advice, or links to tutorial sites would be helpfull. I'm gonna browse the net for a bit looking for what I can to help me in this area. Thanks!
