TGE 1.5.2 on Ubuntu Linux Questions

So I have been using TGE for a few months on Windows for a class at LCC. Since I prefer to use Linux, I finally decided to see if I could get TGE working well on my Ubuntu partition. So I stuck the FSP project from class in the example folder, and executed the bin file. Everything loaded fine, but the framerate was from the dark ages.
So, any suggestions on how to increase my speed? I do have the right 3d drivers installed. I can run any of the linux 3d stuff just fine.
Also, I was wanting to see what effect recompiling would have. Would I just use the makefile in TGE/engine? I thought I would ask first, that and go look for the answer in the docs as soon as I have time today.
Thanks!
Oh, system info:
Ubuntu 7.10
Intel Core Duo 1.67 CPU
Intel 945 graphics
2GB ram
It's a laptop, hence the sad graphics card.

Dunno, I just extracted what they gave me in the download. Haven't compiled anything.

Thanks,
Liam - My specs are below.
Ubuntu 7.10
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB
2GB RAM
2.2GHz AMD Turionx64 Mobile (Dual core)
Edit: I have all the latest drivers as well. I also installed the required applications/libraries to run Linux (as stated in Sys Req for TGE). Weird, but expected, it is sometimes hard to port engines to other platforms.

I have had the same problem too. LAG framerates low low low... I don't think recompiling the source would work, unless you are a Linux/C++ pro. As the System Requirements section stated, the last known version of TGE to successfully run on Ubuntu was 1.4.2. It was worth a try! But any more info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

At the console, type "glxinfo" and paste the top dozen or so lines here. The problem is likely that your graphics drivers aren't correctly installed.
