Hello everyone,
I hope I'm placing this in the right forum.
Recently I purchased "Torque for Teens" by Michael Duggan and I've really enjoyed reading and skimming thru its various chapters and found myself ready to start playing with it's tutorials.
Unfortunately, I ran into the little snag that the Demo Engine offered on the book CD was wrong. This was deeply frustrating to me but I marched on knowing that all questions can be answered with a little leg work online with the help of Google.
I later found this link that spoke of the problem...
http://www.7hunters.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=25
So far I figured I was back on track... alas this is not the case...
I then ran into the same problem mention on that forum of missing smoke particles.
as seen here...
http://www.7hunters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=920
Can some help me out here?
...and also what other hick-ups can I expect from this books tutorials?
Thanks,
deeply frustrated and disappointed :(

OK, first off you can download the exact same demo from here at the GG site. In fact, here's a link to the hicup you might be talking about: http://www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=1549 . In that it says there was a mistake and did not include the FPS demo that is supposed to come with the demo.
One thing to do is hit F11 and the ~ key. That will bring up the console dialog and you can actually see where the errors are. With that, then you can give a more detailed answer about your problems.
Now, on to your problem. By the looks of it, you might have a bad install of Torque. I've only used Torque with Windows XP, so if you're using something else, I can't be of much more help that what I am putting below.
First, download a new install from this site and completely uninstall Torque from your HD. I even delete the folder that is usually left behind. It is usually empty, but I guess I like to make sure when it uninstalls, everything is gone, just incase. Also, download the Torsion demo as well. This is the best tool for working with Torque script, period.
Secondly, after reinstalling Torque, go to My Computer, (I know this is covered in the book already, but I want you to try it this way), and go to C:\Torque\TGE_1_5_2\example and open the main.cs file. change the default game to look just like this:
Now, in that same folder click on the torqueDemo icon and you should be back to the opening screen and where you were to begin with. Now, select a mission, any mission and start the mission.
Let me know if you can get that far. If you can, I can guide you easily from there on how to get going. If you need to, you may email me by clicking my name and using the email in my profile. I'll be in and out of my office all day, but I should be able to answer any questions you have.

Actually James, there is no official place for "Torue for Teens" posts yet, much to my continued calls for it.OK, first off you can download the exact same demo from here at the GG site. I just bought the Torque for Teens book and downloaded the 'errata'. But it's full of DLLs and EXEs. Anyone know if there is a Mac-compatible update?

The demo included with the book does not include the FPS Starter Kit that is referenced throughout the book. You can download an updated demo which includes the FPS Starter Kit here.
