Next-Gen Rts question

What makes the Next-Gen Rts Next-Gen? Higher polycounts, shaders, tons of particles, lots of soilders.

Weird question Donovan.

I guess it could be a few, or all of your mentioned points. Also gameplay its an important factor. Good story telling is a common factor as well, if you take the giants of the genre: C&C, Starcraft, Company of Heroes, and also World in Conflict has a pretty good story on on its campaign.

But at the end, I think that the "next-gen" thing is more a marketting thing, as there is not an specific pettern, an sometimes those nomenclatures are abused.

Pretty pictures seem to be "next gen".

But gameplay has been given a backseat in most games on the shelves for the last several years, which irritates me. I've been having more fun on the Wii virtual console, XBLA, and GameTunnel than I have over the counter at Wal-Mart regardless of what gen they advertise.

Next gen is a term used by console manufacturers to pimp their new machines. Since consoles don't have the same quick rate of hardware upgrades as PCs, a new generation is a big deal. So marketers take this to the "XTreme!!!!" level and come up with buzzwords to impress into the public consciousness. And it leaks back into the PC market. So a "next gen" RTS is one with graphics comparable to what the latest consoles can do.

@David it could be said that on the RTS genre there has been some important adjustments to the gameplay. Since the Dune II, the genre has passed through infinite adjustments on its style.

Today, Company of Heroes, World in Conflic, Supreme Commander, etc., are games that are introducing fresh changes, and leaving behind the old dynamics, where you had to basically harvest-produce-attack, on a repetitive cicle to the end of the game, without any real strategy.

In conclusion: my point is, that if its at least ONE genre, where the gameplay is taked into account for the "next-gen" thing, well, thats the RTS genre.

Buzzwords always make me laugh. Remember when the marketers came up with "8 MEGABIT CARTRIDGE" that you saw splattered everywhere? Simply for the fact that 8 megabits was a larger and therefore more impressive number than "1 MEGABYTE CARTRIDGE!"

But in answer to Donavan:
I've never really heard a real-time-strategy called "next gen". It usually refers to consoles/hardware.
