Rts statistics info

What is the typical polycount for environment models? Trees, rocks, ruins ect... I know its hard to say what is the typical amount because there is some many thinks that could be called environment models. How many polys should go to envrionment models that is on screen.

Typical Rts game, how many units are on screen?

The reason I need to know this is because I need to build a test level to test out my Rts Fx and monitor how it effects the frame rate so I can optimize the particle systems.

Thanks
Don

Well, intresting question. The environment is a critical part on any RTS game, but as you well comment, its difficult to estimate a polycount average without a context. We have some clues, though: the excelent RTS Environment Pack; in case you dont have it (I dont have bought it yet) lets ask to any charitable soul, to tell us the average polycount of the Todd Pickens pack models.

As quick info anyway, we have a note from Todd in the pack's documentation:
Quote:In the case of the trees in this pack, all of them are around 200 polys (not including the collision volumes).

Also, as a complementary info, you should read on TDN, the James article on RTS polycounts

I'm sure Todd will jump in here when he has a moment but if not, I can look at the files (I have this excellent pack) and get you some numbers.

I think it's safe to say that you can get away with really low poly numbers on rocks and such since your player(s) will be focused on the units (where I'd spend most of my poly budget).

If you can afford Todd's pack, I'd recommend picking it up.
