by ysun · in Constructor · 01/14/2008 (5:37 pm) · 17 replies
Hello,
I can not export such portals in my map. The Constructor will crash.

Hope this bug can be fixed as soon as possible.
Thanks.

I have a test version of constructor that I would like for you to try. If you would, make your portal brush a single rectangular block, put it in place of the of the arch shaped brush, and see if this fixes it. I think if you make your portal like that you are actually making 13 portals, some that open up into other portals. I will email you a link to the test.

@Jaimi, are you picking up where Matt left off? Did you receive my long detailed lists of Constructor bugs Matt asked me for, but never replied to? (If not ask him for them.I dont have any email history on this computer.)

No, I was just trying to help with bugs because I had some free time over the weekend. This was just something I thought I could help with, and have some fun at the same time.
Feel free to post any bugs in the other thread, and I will try to help out if I can. Some of the bugs that you've had may already be fixed - please verify before posting. I'll send you an email with the test version.

Jaimi, thanks for your fix version, now I can export .dif with the portals in that shape without any crash. Nice job, man!

Just keep it simple on the portals and you will have no issues with it.

Important thing to remember about portals is that you want to keep them as simple as possible. It doesnt matter if the portal brush itself extends into the geometry as it should. This gives the portal a good seal on the area and gives the portal brush the ability to NOT have to be an exact shape of the hole its covering.Just keep it simple on the portals and you will have no issues with it.

Wait a minute, this needs clarification. How can Sun Yu get a portal to work shaped like that? That shape goes against everything I've read and experimented with on portals. Did someone fix something so we CAN have portals with complex geometry? If so where can I get a copy? I've got doorframes and windows in the Vespers monastery that look like Sun Yu's so I could really use whatever fix he was given.

I think it should also be clarified if portals must not intersect more than 4 brushes...

I'm still under the opinion that the portals should be big blocks instead of odd-shaped, but if it works, that's fine. I'll send you a link to the updated constructor for you to test out. But you must tell me if it fixed any bugs or created any new ones, OK?

Sometimes portals seem like they are working, when in fact they are not. Lazy sobs....

Also as Caylo said sometimes portals seem like they are working, when in fact they are not.

Before using Jaimi's fixed exe, the Constrctor will crash when export the complex geometry. Jaimi's fixed exe works. Also as Caylo said sometimes portals seem like they are working, when in fact they are not.

What's with the secret copy of Constructor? First there was a Patched version by Matt, now another one? Thank you all for working on making it better, but why not share it with everyone so that we can find/report any bugs faster, or get different configurations to test the things that were fixed and make sure that it works all of the time, etc. Truly, thanks for your hard work guys. Now share the wealth, please. :-)

It's not a "secret copy". I was just holding off releasing it to everyone until I had the bugs that were reported verified fixed correctly. Currently it's ready for release (as of 10pm CST last night). If Matt is able to host the file (I just sent him an email), then we can have a public patch up soon. Jaimi

Thoughts? New versions?

I have big cube used for portals at the door to my building, it crashes only when I change the object entity to portal.Thoughts? New versions?

EDIT:
I may be thinking of Map2DIF crashing when exporting from QuArK, though.

Anthony, make sure that your portal overlaps the geometry some. I know that there was an issue with it crashing on invalid portals because they were not sealed correctly (at least that's what I think I recall...it's been a long time since it was well before this thread started).EDIT:
I may be thinking of Map2DIF crashing when exporting from QuArK, though.

Nope, it seems to not like the portal setting
