Is torsion still supported and developed?

by Mikael Vinding · in Torsion · 12/30/2007 (1:45 am) · 15 replies

About to pick up a license to torsion, but I am a bit concerned that it is 'dead' software? Doesnt seem to be a lot of activity on the developer website (well none in the last 10 months).

I did see a lot of posts here, but just wanted to confirm..

I'm hoping all is well and its a live project, but seems a bit like it may not be? Anyone know?

Torsion is the only editor I use on Torque script. Even if its not being worked on any longer it won't matter that much as it can now pretty much do all I want from it.

Yes, Torsion is still being developed however at a slower pace. Tom Spilman (creator of Torsion) now seems to be an integral part of Garage Games and he (as well as the rest of the crew) are busy right now.

When you buy Torsion you will gain access to the Torsion private forum here. Tom is readily available to answer any question you might have and will take into consideration any feature requests.

Which private forum?

I own Torsion and do not have one visible that I could add to my subscription.

Mikael,

You have no idea who I am or any reason to trust me :) however, I think Torsion is worth it at twice the price. After using it I wouldn't use anything else to do TGB development. Tom is very responsive and interacts will with his customers. There will be a new version out soon, Tom has said as much.

Sounds great - I'll pick up a license today. I just saw sickhead games and saw it was a 'dead' site for the last 8-10 months or so, with no updates.. I've been burnt before buying software that then 'died on the vine' briefly thereafter, so thought i'd ask.

I've only heard good things, so looking forward to using it.

Btw - what happened with a mac osx version? anyone know? I saw that there was some talk about it back in june?

@Marc: Lol, nevermind. I thought this was a private forum, but since this disucssion is taking place here, I guess not. Sorry.

@Mikael: The other viable alternative I have found is CodeWeaver (just google it). I had problems getting it setup though it has some features that I wish Torsion supported (namely, variable typing, i.e. you can tell the IDE what type any variable is so the popups will work better).

Touching on what Brian said, is there anyone who can shed a bit more light on the pros and cons of CodeWeaver versus Torsion? I am going to have to use one eventually. I have no problems paying for Torsion (Codeweaver is free I believe?) but I have no real feeling as to which one is better. Furthermore, where does the Tide plugin for Jedit fit into all this? Is its function similar to that of Torsion and Codeweaver?

Its been almost 7 months since the last beta release, Tom mentioned some fixes in July, but that release hasn't come out yet, thats 1.1 Final.

Last post he made regarding 1.2 (the Mac release) was that he was working on a wish-list for features for it.

There are still many outstanding issues in the latest Torsion beta, but it does have that it was last updated more recently than CodeWeaver. Final release of Codeweaver was February 2007.

I am still hoping for a 1.1 Final release of Torsion, was hoping I'd get it for Christmas.

I haven't touched TIDE yet, but it looks as dead or almost as dead as Codeweaver. No new forum posts in over 2 years, and the most recent SVN update was 10 months ago. Compared to 11 months on Codeweaver and 7 months on Torsion, but at least it is in SourceForge, so if you really want a fully featured IDE, you can make it yourself.

I am really hoping more updates come down the line as Torque 2 gets closer to fruition. I have a pipe dream of Torsion IDE being integrated into the main Torque 2 release, hehe.

Of course, Elixir actually getting released is another one of those dreams.

So sad that there is no active editor supported.. someone almost ought to make an eclipse plugin or something. I know nothing about that kinda stuff or i'd almost just go do it.

Since apparently the main torsion guy is busy @ GG, why dont they integrate torsion into TGE/TGB and have a kickass environment? Seems kinds obvious if you ask me.

[unrelated to torsion but since i'm ranting...]
Its so sad, because TGB seems to be a great product, but there are so many little things that just bring the experience down and make it seem like a kids-after-school project at times.

I know there is an argument to be made that 'but the other guys are not better' - fair enough, but thats not really an excuse to release something that is sub-par on everyday things like documentation, updated samples - even if it is the greatest engine since sliced bread. It raises the bar much higher for new guys like myself.

Torsion is not a GarageGames product--it's made by Sickhead Games. This forum is here as a courtesy because we do sell the product (and recommend it), but suggestions, comments and critiques would probably be best served if sent to Sickhead Games directly.

On the Eclipse front, there was a TorqueScript IDE, but AFAIK it is no longer supported. And on the Sickhead Games front, Tom closed down the Torsion forums in favor of these ones, so in short of e-mailing them, this is our only outlet to them.

The Mantis bugtracker at http://mantis.sickheadgames.com/ gives me some hope, bugs are still being fixed, noting a 1.1 Final release, but seriously, we haven't had any news on when/how/if 1.1 Final is coming out in months.

Pretty sure the most recent update on 1.1 final was on September 10th that there was a serious bug Tom was testing internally that was maybe fixed. After that, he made mentions a couple months later of fixes that were already in 1.1 final, and features for 1.2.

Perhaps we need to rekindle the "Update on Torsion, please." thread

Ok.. lets clean this thread up! :)

Quote:bit concerned that it is 'dead' software
Your concern is misplaced.

Quote:Doesnt seem to be a lot of activity on the developer website
We're in the middle of a website redesign which has pretty much stop us from changing anything on our site. Still ... its a developer website... they're often left stagnant between releases of products. Unless your Bungie and can afford a full time web staff... the developers are busy working on products not website chit chat.

Not to mention a half dozen other projects we're working on.

In short we're been busy being successful.

This is silly.... Torsion has always been under active development.

Just because you don't see a Visual Studio update every month doesn't mean Microsoft abandoned Visual Studio. And Microsoft has hundreds of people working on Visual Studio!

Relax people... i'm one man. ;)

Quote:When you buy Torsion you will gain access to the Torsion private forum here.
There isn't a Torsion private forum. There wasn't a need to hide information from people that haven't purchased Torsion. This forum is the right place to find news and discuss Torsion issues.

Quote:what happened with a mac osx version
Still being worked on. I'm not an OSX expert and i'm one man... i don't have as much time as i would like to get it working.

Quote:I have a pipe dream of Torsion IDE being integrated into the main Torque 2 release
Quote:why dont they integrate torsion into TGE/TGB and have a kickass environment?
Keep dreaming. At this point i will not integrate the Torsion IDE into any flavor of Torque. I've been asked by various GG guys time and time again, but its not a well thought out idea. I'd love to have someone convince me otherwise. So far i've not heard a convincing argument why its better than the stand alone app you have now.

Please start a new thread on this topic... i'd love to discuss it.

Quote:Elixir actually getting released is another one of those dreams
Tell me about it... Torsion has had support for it for over a year. Its a great idea that never got past an alpha phase.

Quote:Tom Spilman (creator of Torsion) now seems to be an integral part of Garage Games

Lets be clear about this.

I am not a GarageGames employee and i hope to never be a GarageGames employee. Nothing against GG, but if i was working for GG then that means that Sickhead failed and i had to go get a JOB. That would be the ultimate suck.

We have done a few contract jobs for GG (couple that you guys haven't seen yet), we contribute alot of technology to the engines, and we're selling a couple of products on this site. That's about it.

We're fiercely independent at Sickhead and it will always be that way.

Quote:1.1 Final
I want this shipped more than any of you guys do.... hands down.

@ Tom

Haha! Thanks for the update.

Torsion's awesome. I can't even count how many times the Torsion debugger has pulled me through a nasty bug. It came to the point a long time ago, where if I'm on a different dev machine that doesn't have Torsion, I won't even bother trying to solve a slightly complicated script bug, because I know it will take me 3-4 times longer without Torsion.

Tom, thanks for the update
