Content packs - What do you need?

by Andy Hawkins · in Torque Game Engine · 10/18/2007 (3:24 pm) · 22 replies

So after a long hiatus, I am making more content packs. So what would be most useful? What genre? What sort of things?

There seems to be an abundance of medieval stuff so I wont bother there.

I guess this could be a very open ended convo, but there might be demand for something specific.

This could just be me, but I'm noticing that all of the weapon packs are the same. You see the exact same WW2 weapons over and over, with slightly more detail than the last pack.

What I would like to see in a content pack, is originally designed weapons that no other content pack has.

If there are original gun ideas out there that no other game has yet, you've got my money.

What sort of guns? Made-up guns or just contemporary guns that haven't been supported yet?

You could do things like an Uzi, Mac-10, maybe some hunting rifles and shotguns?

I'd love to see a Space Theme pack. Small transports (shuttles), Cargo Ships of
various sizes, Scout Ships, Fighters, and a few BIG space stations.

(kinda gave away what my game is about huh...)

Ahh I see. Yes I have some good references for those. The problem with real guns is the copyright on the soundfx - I would have to seek them from real sources. I will look into that.

Space theme pack - no problem! A lot of my content for my game BRAVE will be reusable in content pack form.

How about a mecha pack :)

Space ships. Still need them. I have a clear idea of how they should look like. Hmm, maybe that's individual contract work? Maybe :-) Anyway, space ships are always needed, not only since the FGE. :)

@Martin
Here Starships! :)

Hehe, very good, but unfortunately the style doesn't match my requirements... :-) But good work!

Regardless of genre and style, I think a series of packs that complement each other will be well received. Frogames comes to mind here.

Absolutly true. Most packs that come out are like island solutions. The overall style must match over the content packs. Man, if I'd be artist, I would make content packs the whole day... :-)

Check out 3DRT, they have some nice space ships.

Hmm, right, but not the style I want... :-)

Wish I could model like that. I'm lucky if I can get a boxy little shuttle craft to
look remotely like a space craft.

I don't think it's the lack of tools...

I have,

- GameSpace1.6
- MilkShape3D
- Blender
- 3D World Studio

It must be just lack of talent... :-(

How about a sub/boat content pack, or maby a mountable/unmountable animals pack? There's nothing like those out right now, and there isn't a good tutorial on making a boat/sub.

There is the horse armor from 3ddiggers.

Wow there's heaps of answers thanks. So as for style I would make them look realistic and mod them to suit people's style if it was cost effective.

I'll get started on a sci fi pack then with some weapons as well. I have already started on an Mp5, M16, Beretta, grenades and dynamite.

Please send more requests. For now I would just do small $15 packs.

I have a Saturn Rocket for free here if people want it. I just whipped it up for a placeholder rocket for my game about an hour ago. It's nothing great, not an example of my work, but fun to have :)
Saturn Rocket
- 3ds, lwo, lws, directx, obj (you need to add the texture back on) - 100 meters high.

@Kevin - is there anything not here in terms of guns required...looks to me like they have everything covered.

That's exactly what I'm saying. It's the same guns in every pack.

If you could make a custom design, then make a model and texture, it would get a lot of people's money. (Including mine)

Hmmm, I'm confused now. So you want an Uzi? or a weapon based on an Uzi but modded with like a laser scope or something?

I am making some guns for my game like a Plasma rifle ( based on the Steyr Aug ), a grenade launcher (like an M16 with a grenade launcher) and a cannon based on the Howitzer - are these the sort of guns you mean?

In the end unless you're doing a game for a specific theme, a gun is a gun is a gun.

If you're doing 007 you need a Walther PPK, if you're doing Russian KGB then you
might need a Makarov 9MM, if you're doing a 70s mob hitman you might need a
pair of chrome 45s, or a .38 with a silencer for the 80s.

I myself am not intersted in a weapons pack at the moment, I was just throwing
some ideas out there.

I'm more interested in space craft and human models of various shapes and sizes.
Not every girl out there is 5'10" tall and has 38, 22, 32 measurements. :-)

Oh - okay.

Well if anyone wants a specific gun for their game including scripting to get it into Torque I can do them on request. I'll work out pricing based on expected demand for the gun.

Same goes for any object really - ARTIST FOR HIRE!!!! HERE!!!
