Weird sound problem

by Stefan Beffy Moises · in Torque Game Engine · 08/26/2002 (5:47 am) · 5 replies

Hey there,
I've had to format my HD and reinstall everything a couple of days ago...
after I reinstalled Torque, I've noticed some strange sound behaviour:
*some* WAV sounds and *some* Ogg Vorbis sounds do play, others not... so we got some intro screen with ogg background music (which doesn't play! - I've tried various tracks, so the problem isn't the track), a second intro screen playing an AVI movie and ogg music (which *does* play!), the main menu with background ogg music (does play also!) - but: the standard button mouseover sounds *don't* play (they also don't play in the latest RW version, TGE1.1.2 or the latest HEAD!!).
Finally, there is in-game Ogg Vorbis music which does play, and so do the standard footstep or weapon sounds...

On the other hand, if I toggle the option menu in-game, the button sounds *don't* play...

And all the Ogg sounds use the same audio channel and AudioDescriptions, etc. ... and so do most of the WAV sounds...

Now is that weird or what!???!

I have no idea if this is related but I thought I'd throw it out in case you haven't seen this.

Hey, thanks for your help!
If I use this old lib, the button sounds play now, but the first intro music still doesn't ... and now I get a crash sometimes, mostly caused by the AVI I'm playing (that has a background ogg sound)...
Man, this is SO weird... and the weirdest part is that it worked before I reinstalled Win2k ... with the same OpenAL installer I used back then...
oh, well... maybe there is another version out there that works even on my machine... :/

Mike,

Thats interesting. And this will work in the engine?

I've been having some trouble recently trying to get projectile sounds to follow the project but they always seems to be right next to me no matter what I did.

I'll give this different dll a try and see if it solves my problem.

Apparently it works. I don't know the details I just saw this on the Crime Force website.

Stefan, I have the ogg code in that's based off the 1.1.2 engine in the current stable release. The only glitch I've noticed so far is it will crash after looping music once in awhile. Normally this only happens after playing the entire song more than a few times though. Not sure why. It doesn't seem to always happen.
