Normal Maps and Bump Maps for TGE 1.5.2

by Villa Hirschberg · in Artist Corner · 10/12/2007 (3:35 am) · 11 replies

Hello,

are there normal maps and/or bump maps for TGE 1.5.2?

If so, can anyone point me to documentation about it.

Cheers,
Felix

I didn't know it was so hard to read product info... Especially when game engines should always be throughly researched before a purchase.

@Neil: he was speaking of TGE not TGEA

bump maps only if Modernization kit is integrated (free resource, but lot of work).
Fake normal maps, only.

Stephan, what do you mean by 'fake' normal maps?

@Sean: now that I read it again... I certainly goofed with Environment Mapping. 8-P
I haven't taken a look in Modernization Kit for a while, but I don't remember Normal Maps are supported.

Yes, normal mapping is supported in the MK, as well as parallax mapping.
It'll make some basic normal/depth maps for you on generation *for DIF only*, however this is intended for test and prototyping use only, as you'll get much better results with produced normal/depth maps the traditional way(modelling them and converting to texture, etc).

Thanks for the help.

I meanwhile found a useful page with product info about TGE on the GG site,
you have to look for "feature comparison":

I hear about the Modernization Kit (MK) for the first time. Where can I find it?
Why does it not get integrated into the regular TGE?

Simple. The Modernization Kit is the work of Alex Scarborough before he became an employee of Garage Games.

While it is a very powerful kit and free, it is also true that TGEA has more features. Additionally, the reason why they won't integrate it would be, they already sell a Shader supporting engine. Giving it away for free would be bad business. Alex was just really generous.

As for where to get it:

tmk.superiorcode.com/

If you want the user name and password you will need to get it from the private SDK owner forums. Just do a search for Modernization Kit.

@Ron: Actually, that's not the reason at all. TGE is a product designed to support target hardware that does not have shader capable video cards. Putting in shaders would remove that capability.

Well see, I stand corrected. Heheh.

But look I said something stupid, and you got the official word. So in a way my idiocy was useful LOL.

@Ron

Uh, the other thing you might want to consider is moving the link/username/password to the MK to a private forum, since the Modernization Kit contains source code...

Good point Alan. I updated the post.
