fantasy in modern times?

by Ian Wheat · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 08/22/2002 (7:59 am) · 9 replies

i'm currently asking around at some gaming communities to see what kind of game would sell well and would be enjoyable.
it needs to stand out in a market dominated by FPS games... so my current idea is something like this:

take a Dungeons & Dragons type world and advance the time by 2000 years so that there's technology but still magic and a polytheistic religion etc.

(it's pretty sketchy but I just want to see if anyone likes the general idea)

and i'm very open to suggestions even if the game idea isn't remotely like what i've described =)

have you ever played any square rpgs? the last 5 or so final fantasies have been exactly what you described, especialy 6, 7, 8 and 10 have all been centered around worlds that encorporate magic mixed with modern technology, even futuristic technology.... especialy 6 in which mechanical weapons were actualy fused with magic.... sorry to be the messenger of bad news, but that idea really isnt all that original, its been done to death even.... but hey, no problem, just go back to the drawing board, you'll think of something really cool, just give it another shot :)

the thing with that, though, is that square makes games for consoles. the target audience here is PC gamers.
yeah, sure, FF7 and 8 were also released for PC but less people bought them (as far as I can tell) and this would be in many many ways different from what Square did.

it's to be more fast paced, FPS-style and not turn based in the battle system.
it wouldn't be classified as an RPG... no level/skill system (if there is one it'll be like the one in DeusEx)

the magic system will be very much more D&D style as well... (it's amazing how much you can develop a small idea in a couple of hours)

now, if you still feel that it's not a sellable idea then please do tell and give me some suggestions on good game ideas =)

Yes, the FF series fit this kind of universe.
You have also Shadowrun RPG which mix the fantasy and the Sci-Fi universe.

It's not that an idea is sellable or not... come up with an innovative presentation/something new/ or even something old that people are insatiable for and away you go...

Perhaps consider the titles/rpg's mentioned as inspiration...

well, i've always had this vision of running around with a 3rd person camera and you beating people with a quarterstaff or casting D&D-ish spells... it's not really all that much like the other games you guys have mentioned... but i'm still thinking before I say it's a solid idea =)

I see what you mean, ya, you werent very discriptive in your first post.... I say sure try it, sounds like as good an idea as any, just make sure you dont end up with something like Reighn of Fire the game... as for your concern of sellability, I say who cares? just make a game, if you give it your all and really put a lot of creativity into it and make sure the quality is high, then it will probably sell well (although this isnt always true.... conkurs bad fur day :( )

anyway, good luck :)

Heretic II is pretty much what you just described... if you haven't played it... get a copy... it's fun, especially cooperatively...

Hmm... that is a really good idea. However, these days we don't use swords and the such, we would use more guns and explosives. (Or the rare case of a nuke) so, that would be hard to steer around. Maybe... I don't know.
