2D Content Packs

Hi everyone,

I'd like to raise some discussion about the lack of 2D Content Packs. From my perspective there's a need for it, but pretty much none are around. When starting the current project I bought the TGB Adventure Kit (for TorqueX project) just to get the some tilesets and basic assets to get started. There's bound to be loads great 2D content out there that might be worth money, but there seems to be no market for it as with 3D content. And I'm not meaning a content pack would need to be a complete collection of game assets, but more like a "2D TurboSquid" with different low cost content to search from.

EXAMPLES:
- Ground tilesets. There can never be too much of these. Different themes and styles.

- Game world objects like trees and rocks. Again, you can't have too many of them. If the quality is good enough, these apply to most games out there.

- Particle sets. Anyone can make "a particle", but making lots that actually work and are versatile is worth money. Or better yet, refine it further and make a complete particle animations.

- Buildings. It's a bit trickier as they're more specific and have to match with each other and are more style specific. But if you have the skills to make something

MOTIVATION:
- For a hobbyist game maker like myself, it's not really an option to commission art. Even if it'd be "just some hundreds", it's too much if there's no budget at all. But spending 5-30 on art that doesn't look like "the programmer did it" and solves a need would be worth the time of scraping something together.

- Again for hobbyists it's not an issue that you don't have exclusive rights for it. Make something generic that can be applied in different environments.

- Even though you're probably not getting rich with these, each sale would be extra money for something you might be doing in any case. And if the projects take off commercially, there's a chance for more work doing custom things.

- And especially those of you looking for a career in the industry, it's going to be a lot more convincing to say "I've sold a hundred copies of my content pack" than "I've got some some mad photoshop skillz". Even with limited sales it show you're able a complete usable collection from start to beginning. In a project (commercial or not) it's often more important to have a guy that creates a set of ten decent rocks than one excellent rock.

Comments, questions & suggestions are welcome.

Cheers,
Matias

Hi.

We're currently working on some fun 2D packs, starting with a platform scenery pack. The first pack will contain side views, ideal for horizontal or vertical platform games. If the demand is there, we'll create more, with different styles.

I agree, there needs to be more packs supporting TGB/TORQUEX Indie developers.

I have a Tank sprite for sale on gamebeep.com for 8$. It's maybe not crazy, but it doesn't cost much and there are anim, ground tiles, trails and separated turret.

There are also some free 2D pack there.

It's weird indeed to not see more 2d packs.

Hey-

Glad to hear other people are working on 2D packs as well. I couldnt agree more that there needs to be more. I am currently working on a few 2D content packs as well. Right now they are Special Fx and tile sets. Then I will move onto many others all with different styles in mind. They will include and not in any order(structures, vehicles, charaters, props(game fillers), backgrounds, particle FX, etc.
