100% CPU usage during Find In Files

by James Terry · in Torsion · 09/04/2007 (4:26 pm) · 9 replies

I have been noticing this for a couple weeks, but it seems to be getting worse as the project gets bigger. Every once in a while, Find In Files will slow down incredibly, using 100% of my CPU usage (which ends up slowing down other things on my computer, primarily WinAmp)

I am wondering if there may be a bug in the Find In Files code, or if some caching is going on, because the majority of the time, Find In Files goes really fast without slowing down my system

Thanks

I get it constantly (the slowdown), and 100% sure I have no spyware. You can test it by trying to stop your search. Once it starts searching, it's a pain to stop.

I get this also, and my computer is clean. I'd say it happens about 1 in 10, or 1 in 15, but incredibly annoying, since I don't know when it's going to strike. Very noticeable since I'm often running video/media on my second monitor while coding.

Yeah, its about 1 in 10 for me. Torsion's statusbar will stop on a file (any file, its never the same one) and just sit there using 100% resources for anywhere from 3 - 15 seconds, its quite a bit longer if I tab over to another application.

Wow, just managed to make Torsion lock up for 65 seconds using a find in files

That's crazy... what version are you running James?

V1.1.130 Beta

Its incredibly sporadic. Sometimes a find in files goes perfect, other times I get a few half second pauses as the results are showing up, and then I get the big stop, where Torsion stops responding, the status bar shows a filename, and it just hangs there. Usually it clears up in a few seconds, but maybe 3 times a day it last longer than 5 seconds.

Hum... what is your CPU? Single or dual core? If single core do you have hyperthreading? I'm wondering if its sometimes just starving the primary thread.

Have a 3.8 Ghz Pentium 4 single-core. Not sure if it has hyperthreading or not
