My Own Company

by JD · in General Discussion · 08/25/2007 (8:20 pm) · 10 replies

Hello, I'm trying to start my own publishing company, I'm wondering what steps I need to do, aside from buying the name :P, I plan to publish software, games, and other misc stuff, I would like legal advice, tips, who to look for; as far as investors go, who to target, how to target them and get there attention, what kind of hosting I would need, ANYTHING would help :).

TY in advance!

That's a lot of questions. Well. You should finish a game before you shop around for investors, hosting, bookkeeping, management and the sort.

It'll be impossible to source funding unless you have something to show off. No one, except your mother, will invest in your idea unless you can back it up with proof of your skills. The same for people in the forums. If you have something to show, people will be more invlined to offer advice. If you have a rough screenshot, people will be able to give you advice on art. If you have a finished game, people will be able to suggest where you can find like-minded people to sell to.

Start with a small project, get it done, then build on it.

Nikos, he didn't say he wanted to develop the games.
he said he wanted to publish them...

crazy.

seems this is definitely the wrong place / way to start.

seems to me if you had the investment capitol to start this, you would not be here asking questions.

Lol agreed, this is an idea I'm playing around with. I've been looking up what to do... trying to get ideas running around...

Tell me if this is a good idea: I publish ONE game *the game I am indeed making and almost completed with* using my own company name. Then I begin offering services such as hosting the actual game files, selling them, perhaps offer services to wrap them into installs, create the website for the development team, create the e-mail service requested, ftp server needed.

What I'm trying to achieve here is a small line of business to start with, maybe 2 development teams who are too small to appeal to larger publishers like VU, and others. Maybe you are a development team and are not yet ready for presenting yourself to GG, I am offering you assistance, of course with a fee. but this is not like $100 per hour or something, I'm learning as we all are, I'm trying to get my foot in the industry, maybe you need a website, maybe you have one just need space, possibly need assistance with your game; these are the things I'm offering, I am by no MEANS a guru of Torque, but I do have lots of "connections" and I'm persistant in learning. Pricing will be discussed through either phone, fax, or via e-mail. Please contact me either at james.davis93@us.army.mil or at james@lethonline.com

Ty!

Dude

Youre waisting your time!

Game developers, publishers are a very independant lot and also "jacks of all trades" when they are
small they are busy learning all the things u mentioned above for themselves, BECAUSE

!) they want their idea protected and dont want to dish out money for services they cant afford
2) they cant afford even a small fee

Those that do manage to make a game then have all the expereince that u offer so have no need of you again, the only people they want to possibly hear from at the end of of a loooong development cycle IS
one of the big boytjies who want to throw buckets of muney at them

OR you can maybe really create something like you talk about, something people can see, and offer something concrete, at a indie, small (very small), fee. And better think of several costumers, you cannot afford a business with few clients with a small fee each: a few at a big fee, or many with small fee... (obvious point)

I think its not bad at all, but sounds too abstract for now.

I dont think you are wasting your time. Push for you idea if you believe on it... but as always, dont start thinking that will fail... or you already have fail.

PS: sorry for my english...

Sound great. Finish the game you are working on. If its good and successful people will be willing to ask or even pay for your advice. Forget about the rest right now. Just finish your game.

(Being its almost complete a few screen shots would be most welcome! I love seeing things people are working on)

The Indie Game Development Survival Guide by David Michael provides a good structure. Packed with info on how to go about it. A lot of discussion on how to publish, and why being indie can give you a better deal than what developers get who work to contract for the big publishing houses.

Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. How alse are we going to learn. I say let him find out for himself if this is something he wants to do. I found out the hard way that when it comes to game design and development there are more things involved then designing a level, code and so on. Like some of you said you have to be "Jack of all trades". Having a business sense is also a plus.

I say if you want to do it then get on with it and we should all offer advice not bash on him. My advice to you is plan and plan some more. Get a management software and track everything. Setup your company and get ready to dish out some cash to register your company name. This is just the start.
