G'day,

As an avid gameplayer, and uncle of four, I've noticed a huge failure on the part of games developers to satisfy the young or new gamer niche. For example, my nieces and nephews are playing games like Shrek etc, mainly movie franchise games, that are simply too difficult or just seem to be aimed at a more experienced gamer. I believe they've missed out on the 'introduction to gaming' that people of my generation got from games like Alex the Kid, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario etc. Games that were simple, didn't require hours upon hours of play to get into, weren't 'career' games (like these anti-social MMO's), and were about testing your reflexes and hand-eye coordination.

So therein lies the project. One platformer/puzzler would not warrant an entire disc, particularly a 360 disc, so I'm hoping to rally enough support and contribution from the Torque community to band together, and compile a collection of 'old-school' platformers & puzzlers and simple RPG games. Not a profit to be made I wouldn't think, but it would certainly be an accomplishment, would it not?

Ok, anybody who's interested post a bit about what they think of the project, and what they could/would contribute

Excellent idea. What do you have in mind. I completely agree 3D games and the shear sophistication of games in general have alienated much of the younger market. Children long to play these games and feel the simple rewards of achievement, but get left out of the mass market appeal.

I've been trying for months to find others with this mindset. I have a young son who loves videogames, but so many deal with hack-n-slash, or blowing things up. I'm currently working on a simple game, using the default Kork/Elf Girl. I plan on it being a simple "Rescue the Princess" type game, similar to Legends of Zelda (is that old-school?).

The main character will walk around (no weapons) and talk with NPC's, find clues, complete tasks, solve the mystery, and rescue the Princess.

Basically the game uses the four movement keys (ADWS) and the number keys. Nothing complicated. No fancy multiple button combinations, and no violence, so it should be age appropriate for gamers from four to ten years old.

If this sounds like something you'd want, let me know and I can send it out. Old school platformers, like pac-man, or donkey-kong, may be better using TGB. I think it's designed for side-scrolls.

Ah, how the faithful grow :)

I'm admittedly suprised that people are actually interested in anything but "Let's make our own WoW" haha,
this is indeed hope for alot of us!

I'm currently dancing around platforms, at the moment I'm a Graphic Design student, so I intend to work mainly with flash - the new Actionscript 3.0 can only bring good things.

"Old School" may be inspiration, but don't let it be a restriction. Simple is always good, because simple is usually fun! Lack of voilence can only be a step forward as well!

On the subject, is it just me, or does the 'SAW' 'saga' (I shudder to imply that there could be more) mark a new low in human entertainment - glorified snuff films in cinemas?

Keep the enthusiasm coming guys ;)

Count me in! My son plays "the wrong" types of games all the time :) so i think the idea is great.
My email adress is in the profile.
