I was just reading your terms. They are a bit demanding, don't you think?

On This page parts B and D are kind of dumb.

If someone wants your models bad enough, they will get them. Requireing things such as obfuscation only puts overhead in your code and makes things unessasarily complex. Also you are working under the assuption that copy protection works, when in fact it doesn't. Encryption requires me to encrypt the data, hide it away, and then give the key to the same person I'm trying to keep the data from. You see how that doesn't make any sense at all? People who just want to play the game and look at the pretty graphics won't care about the models, and the people who want the models will break the system to get them anyway.

I don't want to treat my customers like criminals. I understand that there are people who want to get thier fingers into places. You can take solice that it's only a fraction of a tiny percent of people who do, and even then it's pretty much just ceriosity. When taken outside of the realm of a game assest, a model is pretty dull by itself.

I just wanted to bring that to your attention. The current copyright system we have works fine, and there really isn't a need to impose rules on top of it. If anything, adding draconian dictates tends to make you look oblivious to the media you are working in. (i.e. digital distrobution) Copyright is designed "to promote the useful arts and sciences", not lock it away. If someone wants to look at your models and learn from them, so be it. If they want to make thier own game and distribute your assets without your permission, well, that falls under normal vanilla copyright infringment and there are already rules on the books for that.

In a nutshell, a good quote can come from the futile attempt to put encryption in DVD players to prevent the copying of DVDs

"The worst way to keep a secret is to put it on the shelf at Best Buy."

What I find most interesting in all of this is that the 3DRT mech walker model looks surprisingly similar to a (heavily) copyrighted MadCat mech from the BattleTech gaming universe.

3DRT Mech Walker

MadCat found on this very poorly built website. NOTE: Deep linking to that image is almost a necessity considering the site layout - ugh!!

Anyway, the resemblance is striking, to say the least. FASA, or whoever owns that intellectual property these days would probably have a field day with this.

Even if a customer were to comply with the 3DRT terms and provide encryption, I suspect that he or she would be promptly sued if their game ever made it big and got any media attention.

Also, while I'm on the topic, let me mention another problem with commercial content packs.

I once purchased a 3D model content pack (Arteria's Tropical Pack 1) without knowing that the textures for the models could NOT be used on other models. The models I wanted to use most were the palm trees. Unfortunately, those models were overly detailed (2k+ tris) and had no corresponding lower-quality LODs.

Because of the license, I couldn't legally use the textures to make my own LODs for the trees that I licensed.

Worst of all - the license was not on the Arteria website before I bought the pack (and still isn't as far as I can tell). I commend 3DRT for placing their license agreement in an easy to find place on their website. I wish the same were true for Arteria.

Sorry for the rant.

Aaron thank you for your notice. We are aware of the problem and collection is under full reconstraction right now.
Also we don't prohibit models' modification or use of some parts only. More than that we inspire customers to personalize products by supplying .PSD source files for textures.

Joshua thank you for your thoughts also.
Actually all we are asking for is not to leave models in open format like .3ds .x .fbx or many other popular on the market. That's not much work to compile models into basic archive.
We consider it a fair agreement and don't plan to change it.

It now consists of 4 unique meshes + 26 skins for each.
(1 texture pattern is applied to everything with our usual technique.)
2048x2048 texture size for best quality, though can be reduced to 1024x1024 with minor quality loss.
+15 weapons, that use same 26 skins for main mechs. Some of them below.

Got to say, I think you do great work at 3DRT. Purchased both your zombie pack and your city pack - and while the city pack wasn't quite Torque-ready, lacking collision meshes, I still thought it was a top quality product - ported it to another engine, and wham! - had a fully functional city to run about in. Gorgeous.

As for the zombie pack, that's just excellent. I have a number of engines I play with, and I haven't had the slightest problem getting the models into any of them. Just wish i had a use for the mechs, they're looking good.

Hope you keep up the excellent quality of your work in 2008. (And I'm dearly hoping that you consider developing some current-day character packs in the near future).

All the best,

Nick.

Nicolas, I'm happy you have a good use of models. Yes definitely we have modern day characters in works. We are trying to apply same skins system to it so you get lots of different people with 1 mesh.
John Durbin, unfortunately no monthly payment option yet.

Hi 3DRT: Thanks for your very good stuff, I have some questions for you, are your all models in your website Torque ready? and do the buildings in the city pack have the interior , so player can enter the buildings?

Yes all models are exported to Torque format.
Unfortunately no, there are no interiors in city pack.

Do the Industrial construction kit have the interiors in the biulding? and do the Modern military aircrafts pack have the interiors?

btw. it will be very helpful if you can mark "Toque-ready" in your website's product description, in fact I saw your website before, but I did not notice those models are "torque-ready" , I just know that in this thread.
