Getting in the industry...

Hi guys,

Let me first introduce myself, my name is Philippe and I live in France. I am 25 years old and have been working as Technical Director for a start up the last two years.

I am seriously considering entering the game industry at any position. Still, I have a big problem to solve: where to?

You may not know that, but there is so few studios in France to be candidate that I have to look around and need to go to another country if I want to get my objective: becoming Project leader or Producer for game products.

UK and/or US seem to be the best places to find jobs in the game industry.

I have to admit that I am a bit scared of getting so far from my house (especially to the US and West coast)...

So here are my questions:

1/ How US and UK companies recruit foreigners?
2/ Do they recruit foreigners?
3/ How do they help foreigners when getting in the company? (trip, moving to new location, location finding...)

You would really help me if you could answer some of these as it is really important to me now. I REALLY want to get in the industry.

Thanks a lot,

Philippe from Paris,France

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but its a notoriously difficult industry to break into. I suppose the best thing to do is to take the direct route and just phone up various companies, send them you resume and hope like hell theyre interested. To be honest though, they'd probably have to consider you a potentially crucial addition to their staff to help you with the whole relocation thing.
Also, when you say 'start-up' I'm assuming it is in someway assosiated to the game industry, or you have some existing link. Otherwise you're looking at an almost impossible task without starting at the rock bottom and working up, publishing a successful game, or studying something relevent.

Edit: Forgot to wish you all the best! Hope you find a way onto the ladder someway man, it'll probably be tough, but don't give up!
