Zbrush 3/Max9

by Morrie · in Artist Corner · 07/14/2007 (8:43 pm) · 13 replies

I'm trying to make a normal in Zbush 3. I know it has to be exported out as an obj.

question.
When I'm exporting it out what buttons do I set it on?

Can I make a normal map in Zbush and just bring it into Max 9?

How do I make a normal map in Zbrush 3?
I seen a normal map on the side menu, but I can't figure out how to us it or set it up.

On the website it says it makes a normal map, but it doesn't say how to do it.
Does anyone know how to do this.

The section subdivision level is grayed out how do I make it active. (Step 3.
Set your object to the lowest level of subdivision)

Also how do I zoom in and out on Zbrush 3.

Hey Morrie!!!

Basically, Normal Maps are generated out of ZBrush when you have subdivided the (I am assuming!) a single poly... The idea behind Zbrush is you subdivide it, add all the detailing you need and then drop the level back to the lowest subdivision... at this point ZBrush has all the details in its memory and when you ask it to make the Normal Map it creates the details based on the Highest Level of Subdivision...

Hope that helps....

This still doesn't answer my question.
I need to do step 3. I need to lower the subdivision, because it won't let me.
I can't click on it, because its all grayed out. I can see it but I cant click it.

Make a low level poly in 3dsmax.
Import it into zbrush.
Sub divide it > but you must keep all the lower levels.
Goto the lowest Level > which should be one(1).
Go to the Zmapper Pluggin, and generate your Normal map.

For you Normal map to work properly.
Make sure you have the settings for 3dsmax.
Make sure your UV's are set up before subdividing your mesh.

When I first was using Zbrush three(3) they said they didnt have
the normal map pluggin working. I havnt looked to see if that has changed.

All the instuctions I give are working in Zbrush 2

I just checked,
From what I can tell there still is no Zmapper pluggin for ZB3.

Here are two work arounds!

This still doesn't solve my problem.
there isn't a Zmapper pluggin for ZB3. On the toutorials you've sugested step 3 lowering the subdivision is grayed out.

maybe my Max settings are wrong when I export out.
I know I have to export it out in obj. format.
then a window pops up, what should the setting for that be set on.

Your subdivision is greyed out, porbably becuse youve removed all the lower levels.
And yes that is what Im saying. No Zmapper for Zbrush3, as far as I can tell.

ZB2--

As an expirement. - Try using Zbrush2
Bring in a lowpoly. - Subdivide to 5 or 6.
Sculpt it quickly. - Then go to your lowest setting.
Now go to your Zmapper pluggin (Installed seperatley)
And hit the Generate Normal Button. You will see your normal map generating.

ZB3--

The workarounds are showing you how to generate a displacement map, which then
can be turned into a Normal Map.

I really think get it working in Zbrush 2 first, and wait for the ZB3 pluggins to be developed.
Im sure its high on their priority list, since so many people are wanting this feature to
work.
