TGEA, tools and starter kits

by Emiliano Gusmini · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 06/26/2007 (2:37 am) · 2 replies

Hi all,
we have purchased just yesterday TGEA and we are searching infos, tutorials etc to learn quickly to develop with Torque.
we have experience with many languages (from Tubo Pascal to VB.NET) but we are a lot confused because documentation is almost absent or fragmented on this website..

first, we have a question: are all the tools like TORSION, CONSTRUCTOR and SHOW TOOL (already purchased.. maybe an error?) compatible with TGEA or they only works with TGE?
are the starter kits (like RTS) and content pack (RTS enviroment, FX pack etc) usable with TGEA?
we don't want to know HOW but IF ;)

all tutorials and infos about it are appreciated =)

thanks all and greeting from ITALY

p.s. sorry for my english

Saluti al Italia dal Australia!

Torsion, Constructor and Show Tool Pro should all be compatible with TGEA to an extent. Some features may be missing or broken however - for example Show Tool Pro doesn't support TGEA's material system meaning that bump/normal and specular maps won't be visible etc.

The content packs can be ported to TGEA. The main difference you'll have to account for is the material system. This means you'll need to write a small script for any materials used in the content packs. Coding packs will require some wrenching on your part too.

Thanks Tim!
i'm happy to know i'm not alone here :)
and happy to know that tools are only "adaptable" with some hacks to TGEA.

i know that TGEA has a different material management so tools cannot display the right result but reading the forum someone talks about porting.. so i though tools should be ported too.

well!
we have a lot of work now! :)

have you got any suggest to give us for a warm start?
tutorials, links, etc.
we use Lightwave from about 10 years (from version 3.1 on Amiga! great HW!!) but only for arch. vis. or still of hi tech products.
we develop web apps with with .NET 2.0 framework and design flash web sites.
years ago we develop videogames (http://s64.emuunlim.com/games/formula1/formula1.htm , search Formula 1 Grand Prix Circuits! it was a nice old-style racing game! it isn't the only one but my favourite.) and we would like to develop games again.
we have many ideas so.. why not start with a great engine like torque?
we tried other engines (like OGRE) or metalanguage (like DarkBasic) but i think TGEA is the rigjt one to make a nice product without too investments.
we made boardgames too (published in italy, france and germany under different brands and names) so there are many ideas in out heads :P

so.. any help or suggest is very helpfull!

nike work and thanks in advance.
