Torque X Release and Torque X Builder Pricing

by Thomas Buscaglia · in Torque X 2D · 06/14/2007 (4:23 pm) · 84 replies

Just to keep everyone in the loop, here are two important announcements:

First:
As many of you know, we informally announced that we were shooting for the 15th for Torque X 1.0 release in this thred (please read). Well as it happens the powers that be have decided that TGB 1.5 will be released tomorrow instead and Torque X will now go out on Monday.

Why not release Torque X tomorrow and TGB on Monday?
1) TGB is being used by a ton of schools and we want to get them 1.5 ASAP.
2) TGB has been released before. This (TGB 1.5) is just an update, so all the stuff that's previously untested with Torque X (forum links, download pages, activation, everything) is less likely to blow up. If we release Torque X on a Friday and something doesn't work on the website, people won't be around on the weekend to fix it.

Second:
I mentioned that marketting was talking about dropping the price of TXB in this thread. We got the final word today and instead of dropping the price, there will be mutual ignition grants between TGB and TXB, so buying one will grant you access to the other. In short, if you were waiting for TX release to take advantage of the price change, you can go ahead and buy it now.

EDIT: For those who might not know, Creator's Club membership is what allows you to deploy your game to the XBox 360. The Creator's Club bundle download path is still pending, but hopefully all the remaining loose ends will be tied up soon. If you are a member or plan on becoming a member, DO NOT BUY TXB - you will get it free with your Creator's Club membership!

There you have it. If you have any questions about any of this, feel free to ask.
Thanks for your patience, guys.

So will that mean... people that already own TGB will be able to get TXB free?

Yes. Until now, only those who own TGB have been able to ignite TXB(TGBX). Now that TXB will be a seperate product, buying a license to one will grant you access to the other. If you now own a TGB license (or buy one in the future whenever), you will be granted a TXB license. If you buy TXB, you will also get a TGB license. The general idea is that you'll be paying for the 2D toolset and the binaries of the engines will be free.

If you're paying close attention, you might notice that this implies that when you buy TGB you're paying for the tool, not the engine. That's the pricing model for Torque X and that's where we eventually want to move all our tech: binaries will be free, tools will be $, and source will be $. And as always, "$" (in the above context - i.e. in terms of all our shit) will be in everyone's price range. At least that's the vision. There's still a lot of stuff that has to happen first, but I'm confident we'll get there.

To be perfectly clear: buy TGB, you also get TXB; buy TXB, you also get TGB. There are no plans to stray from this model in the near or distant future.

Both are the same price. Not a bundle, but the beginnings of a pricing model that will hopefully make our tech more accessible to everyone.

Does TorqueX Pro come with TXB?

What is the pricing for TorqueX Pro?

You say TXB will cost same as TGB, but will the pro version cost the same as well and does it come with the toolkit as well?

No.

$150 (Indie)

The pricing is essentially the same between the two offerings, though presented a bit differently.

Torque X binary is free.
Torque X Builder is $100.
Torque X Pro is $150.
Total for the complete package is $250.

TGB binary (with toolset) is $100.
TGB Pro (with toolset) is $250.

Note that the $100 toolset overlaps the two engines (purchase of one grants ownership of the other).

Eric

I have few questions

1) if I buy TGB for 100 $ I get TXB binary for free or TX builder for free ? and whats the difference between the two txb ?

2) I was going to buy Tgb within 2-3 days mainly for making platform games like mario.

Now with the platformer starter kit is coming out I think I will buy that as well.

But I am a bit confused as the description page of the kit says it can only be made in torque x.

Now if I buy tgb(binary) and get txb(binary) for free(if i guessed right from above), will I be able to use platformer starter kit in txb(binary)?

or I will still need torque x to use txb ?( if these two are not same thing)

3) TXB mainly makes game for xbox 360, so if I want to make my game for normal windows, linux and mac will i be able to load levels made in TXB into TGB?

Well I am very much confused with this new announcement. I hope you have understood my confusion and can answer my queries.

Regards

1) If you get TGB you get TXB, there is no TXB(binary). Buy either TGB or TXB and the other is free. There is TorqueX(binary) and TorqueX(pro), the first is free the latter costs money.

2) TorqueX(binary) is free, so yes if you get TGB and TXB for free with it you can use the Starter Kit.

3) As far as I know there is no way to convert levels from TXB to TGB. You can go from TGB to TXB however.

Hope this helps.

@Wicked Sunny - XNA and TorqueX make games for BOTH windows And XBox360, so you might as well learn TorqueX, unless you really want support for Mac and Linux...

Lee

can we sell xbox 360 games made with torque x and xna ?

anyhow I don't have an xbox , so even testing will be a problem.

I better start with tgb make few platform games, then rpg and then start with torque x.

I will need to learn some torque scripting for making 3d games in future.

There are a few back-end things that need to happen before it goes live. The biggest one is the cross-granting of TGB/TXB. If Rick can get that and all the other little pieces working, then it will go up today.

No. The XNA EULA restricts commercial products to Windows games, which means you can not sell Xbox 360 titles built with XNA yet. MS is working on a platform for selling XNA Xbox 360 games.
