I like to see good graphics and bebale to do whatever you want. If I wanna shoot someone then I can. I don't really like games that limit you so that is why I LOVE MMO's =)

I would agree that freedom of action is very empowering to a player (a la GTA3).

But most of all, I think they want to be laughing, or awed. Prefereably both.

I agree with Les it doesn't all have to be about shooting it would be nice to interact with characters more than just shooting them all the time.

I'm not sure if anyone ever played a game called Star Trek: Elite Force, but in multiplayer you could tell AI players what to do just by typing messages. And the cool think was, they would most always do it (or die trying) no madder what the command.

So character interaction, Good.

On the serious side of game content:
I think besides "ooo awh graphics" and it has to be Directx 10 crap. Game content is important, then visuals you can hide behind the cutie, awesome ooo graphics but if your game play suchs it.. just such. The best thing to do is figure what you like and go with that. You can be-all to everyone, some people will like it and others will sleep and wake-up complaining about something that got nerf and they are 2 with a level 80 necro, which they bought from ebay.
Anyways...
1. Figure what you like in games you play.
2. Research games; play them figure what you like about them. (Go back to older games in the 90 and earlier 80's that were attempting the genre you want. There have been some really good old schools, that would be really nice .. to make a come-back in something else.

3. Never a good idea to ask what people want in a game; since you never get a true response or just want good idea. (The other problem with this; people can be like fad trends, what is in this week is.. well so M59 next week.)

4. Make your story open-end with story archs; (Develop the story to get the user going.. and then let them figure it out.)(evil grin)
5. Figure who is going to play the game ; teens or teens/adults Is it going to be online or offer multiplayer content
6. Figure who how the player will play the game; make mock-ups on development code; Character creation
movement...etc
7. Never jump in and start coding; you lose focus.. Design a diagram of how the game will operate .. think of everything. Think how you want the game to run and how players will interact with the game.

8. Be leveled headed; If something does not work (game content, game style, game artwork, game feature)
work around it, find another way or just drop it and added in at some other point. Focus.

9. Make the game features simple and easy to remember; do not make task completed and long unless the old item is awesome.

10. Try to limit time-sanks; anything that cause a player to waste more time and other resources to achieve something else; if possible break them down in small manage parts.. long or short.

*Bonus.. The best advice is. "if you have not put the idea to paper, then you are missing out on what players really want." They want something to come to live, not just bunch of click, and F5 and level-ups.

It seems strange to me that you have a name for the game but not a genre. What if everybody who answered said "I really love 'old style more like crusades' type games"? How would you fit such a concept to a name like Atlantis 2042?

I'm developing a game and it doesn't even have a name yet but it does have things called ideas and concepts and genre- maybe I'm going about it wrong, though?

Well brian, I have a name yes, I also have a story behind it, I wanna know what people like, what I can fit into the game that would match, maybe I forgot something that is well-needed. Just because I ask what everyone wants, doesn't mean I'll add it all in =P, so yea you got it wrong :), sorry! :P
