Who's alive in this part of the world?

Well, its not only the fact I feel a little lonely tonight :D ... but is anyone still there?
I have bought the kit about a year ago, and for personal reasons I aproached the community just recently...
and I feel like Justin Mosiman and I are the lastest RTS owners alive in the world!
Is other peole out there?
Tell you what... even when this thread may seem *trivial*, I propose to all of you, to salute, say something about you, about your project or whatever you want. This way, we will know that each other is there, and even we can do some synergy and put some movement to the community... So,
Hi! Im new to the RTS SK, but I feel happy to be finally working with it after some time of reading and research. Well, thats all for now. Your turn :)

What would you like to see in a Rts Fx pack
01/28/2008 (6:12 pm)
I was on an adventure to fine what programming language was right for me so I started with torque script then went to DarkBasic Pro(basic) then went to Torque X(c#) then I realized that the idea of how to program is the same and learn alot. Well I learn that yeah I am more of an artist than a coder. I can read and uderstand torque script but can not write it. Thats weird, I need to learn torque script functions. Then I'll be there I guess. I'll learn that in time. What will helped me learn faster is an IDE that highlighted the keywords functions. Anyways Im aboard on the art side. What would you like to see in a Rts Fx pack

(you remind me the old series "V" as the hero, was called Mike Donovan; it was the surname, but doesnt matter, as we didnt know the first name XD I was a big fan, in my infancy we use to play "V" instead of indians and cowboys)
V... good franchise for a game... umhhh.
But lets come back to the real world. Always good to see people wanting to learn new things, specially when that person is patient. With time you will get it. What IDE are you using?
About the Rts FX pack, well its like an avalanch of info to my brain!
At first I would think on modern military effects, explosions, tracer bullets, missile launchs, mortar trajectory, napalm, artllery barrages.. ufff I tell you, better stop here or you will regret to have had the idea. Check the Company of Heroes RTS, its an excelent source of ideas.
On the other side you also could make ambient effects like dust or fog, but I think Torque has already those.
On a foot note I would tell you: better a few of a really GOOD quality, than many of middle range.

I'm a relative noob to TGE and the RTS Starter kit but I've been coming up to speed. I have some larger plans for FPS and RTS games, but currently I'm doing small projects trying to learn as much as I can, working with resources I find and the Finney books. If it wasn't for my day job I'd have a lot more accomplished :)
I have the RTS Starter working with 1.5.2 and World Domination as a starting point/base.
As a first RTS project I started working on a simple naval RTS game which will have battleships, carriers, airplanes (that take off from carriers), and probably land units that can be deployed. Think Company Of Heroes in the Pacific. I plan on starting very small and working larger as I go.
Right now I have a water map with islands and battleships (awkwardly modeled by me :)) that float on the waterblock (instead of hugging the terrain) and can shoot projectiles. Its a start....
I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions in the future :)

Besides orcs versus martians, i havnt seen many projects using the rts pack, are there many on the go atm ?
I never did carry on with my homeworld updates, i lack the skills to remove terrain dependency :)

Yes indeed, there are various projects cooking overhere. You should take a look for instance to the James work on his People of the Dawn, I specially recommend his blogs, as they have no waste; James is retaking his project with new strenght. Also here on the forums some guys have presented their ideas and some of them are still working on it; ie, you have Khaled, working with his SimU team on an university simulation. There is also an RTS addon pack coming dawn the pipe, and dont forget our work on improving the kit! ;)

Right now I'm just working on adding things to the SK that should have been there to begin with (resources, buildings that do something, etc)...
As soon as I get something resembling a game, I will post more info.

My new game focused on the British Isles and Scandinavia during viking times. You play as the leader of a village of vikings, and eventually unite Scandinavia under your rule. If I can get it to work right, I plan to have a city-building part, where you build up your village, and an RTS part, where you invade other villages.Right now I'm just working on adding things to the SK that should have been there to begin with (resources, buildings that do something, etc)...

Maybe we could make an "Alive RTS Projects" list.
BTW, I guess you already did it, but just in case, check the World Domination Mod, it implements what you are looking for (resources, buildings that do something, etc).

There's almost no documentation and very little official support.
Progress is going slowly with my game because I still don't have much scripting experience, and I a complete noob when it comes to C++

It's sad that GG seems to have abandoned the RTS kit :(There's almost no documentation and very little official support.

Its dissapointing gg abondoned it (especially for the price they charge), but thankfully there are still a few hardcore community members who can help out.

I have to admit I've been drawn to the darkside and been working on some FPS things lately so I haven't worked with this RTS project too much in the past few weeks. But I will get back to it soon.
I plan on porting over some FPS triggered variable skin capture points that I've been working with into this project so there will be an actual game concept of capturing points to gain territory. Then I need to rip out some WorldDomination aspects that don't apply, or even roll back to the standard RTSKit instead, and then smooth out the spawn points for initial units.
Its still a "keep it simple" project to get better familiar with the RTS Kit, and Torque for that matter.

Here are some pics of the battle ships I've been working with on my first RTS project. They're really just place holders to give me something other than the bonecrusher walking on water :)I have to admit I've been drawn to the darkside and been working on some FPS things lately so I haven't worked with this RTS project too much in the past few weeks. The Dark Side!! - dont even mention the posibility again, or we'll have to kill you and throw your body to the crocodiles.
More seriously, happy to know you are working on it Bill ;)
