Who's alive in this part of the world?

Well, its not only the fact I feel a little lonely tonight :D ... but is anyone still there?
I have bought the kit about a year ago, and for personal reasons I aproached the community just recently...
and I feel like Justin Mosiman and I are the lastest RTS owners alive in the world!
Is other peole out there?
Tell you what... even when this thread may seem *trivial*, I propose to all of you, to salute, say something about you, about your project or whatever you want. This way, we will know that each other is there, and even we can do some synergy and put some movement to the community... So,
Hi! Im new to the RTS SK, but I feel happy to be finally working with it after some time of reading and research. Well, thats all for now. Your turn :)

I'm just hoping I can 1 get it working in 1.5.1 or 1.5.2 with all the posts on that conversion and from there learn how to do some things with it. Sadly at this point, since I want to start an rpg project, I think I'm mostly just taking the camera view style from it. But hopefully I can find more things I need in there too, since I did spend the money on it a while back.

The reason so few people use this now is out of frustration, this kit had a lot of problems when it was released and on top of that a lot of people felt mislead thinking the kit would contain a lot more then it did. So shortly after it came out the flames came out and most dropped it from their list of tools.I'm just hoping I can 1 get it working in 1.5.1 or 1.5.2 with all the posts on that conversion and from there learn how to do some things with it. I would agree with the @frustration statement. With the progress since TGE 1.3 that has been made and the spiffy stuff like AFX that has come out, it would be really nice to have all the bugs ironed out and a supported release for 1.5. I mean who really wants to go back to 1.3 after playing with 1.5? :-p

But to be honest, I think the only way for break that circle is US making the step. We have one point in favour and two against. The one in favour is that the art content maded for the kit is much and good. Then we need fundamentally two situations: real feedback on the forums (and/or posts in the blogs/resources) and experienced people working on RTS projects.
The second is the more dificult one. Since boys like Stephen Zepp became GG employees, we loose -as community- experienced and capable people directly interested on improving the kit. Then there is boys like Geom, that posts really good material in his blog, but it is very hard to indentify him like an RTS-kit-man beacuse he dont participate on the forums, and beacuse the blogs/resources dont differentiate the kit ones.
So, we must re-construct a group of comunicated working people, or we are doomed. Im trying to gain some experience myself, but I confess Im not coming fast. Im a System Admin with good concepts of programming (and some experience), but here in Argentina all is five times more difficult for the wannabe Game Developer :/ so, as you can appreciate, I treated to make some noise here in the forums.
What to do then? I think if we all concentrate on work on each one project, and do some feedback on that, something is gonna happen. And dont forget, that even in this "desert" situation, there are some useful posts (ie: porting to TGE 1.5.x) We still have some hope!! :)

Well I agree in part. This part of the GG world seems to be totally forgotten, but its a vicious circle. Little movement in the community from our side, keep us in little-attention situation from GG. Poor attention from GG, dont incentivate movement from us.But to be honest, I think the only way for break that circle is US making the step. We have one point in favour and two against. Ya my first main goal right nowis merging RTS, tge 1.5.2, modernization, and AFX all into one bug free program and then start modding from there. Then I need to change the camera from free movement to locked onto the player (since I'm wanting to make a mulitplayer rpg) and then I guess I will just get to start playing around with the fun stuff there of different monsters and players etc. So hopefully that first merge step won't be ridiculously painfull for someone without much coding experience like myself.

See? our mental powers begin to make effect...

Reading the blogs I found this one where Gavin Bunney talks about his work on AFX+TGE1.5.2+RTS Starter Kit (really good shots of the AFX selectrons), and about his decision of make an RTS game!See? our mental powers begin to make effect...

When I called Garage Games about the RTS Kit, that's what I was told. I was also told they had no plans for any updates or any additions. Now of course this was last year, things can change, but myself and a few others have been awfully skeptical about anything any GG employee has to say about the RTS Kit. Also, check the Product Support list, under the Support tab at the top of the site. Notice the RTS Kit isn't even mentioned there.
Besides that, I've been involved with Torque and the RTS Kit since late last August. I'm actually working on two RTS games at the moment. Lately, I've been learning to model to take alot of the load off of my partner who does all the artwork.

@Novack: Carried over from the thread on the VKit additions to the RTS Kit-Here's the last time that I can find anyone talks about updating the kit. It's Stephen Zepp March 27, 2006. The good news come from you, working in two games, both RTSs. Coding and ARTing? wow thats strong will!! :)
If you have the time, I ask you to read the overall mini-debate above your post in this thread, there is some kind of proposed point-of-restart. Besides you can know about other folks that are working with the kit. And maybe you can talk to us about your work. Are those two games your projects?

Well man, there are sad and good news then. Sad beacuse the Kit is worst than I expected, at the GG eye.The good news come from you, working in two games, both RTSs. Coding and ARTing? wow thats strong will!! :)

Hey everyone, I'm one of two Icelanders here (that I know of.... they're hiding out there somewhere). I've been a member since late November 2002. I was working on several RTS type ideas... Till i discovered my scriptings skills sucked (I'm more of a modeller)... so I learned php and Java instead... but now my old ideas are starting to haunt me... causing me to have a desire to return to Torque... Create games and do something new... Sounds great right?

@Matt - I would start with a basic game design doc if you haven't already. Then figure out a task list of features you want in it and make that your todo list. Then just start cranking away on those. :) Just a few tips!

I had the engine for over 1 year and have not done one thing with it. I too would love to make a C & C style game with it just for fun. It's sooooooooo full of bugs that I couldn't hardly get past the example. Not sure why gg left us hangin' like they have.

Again, I recommend you to read the previous debate in this thread, so you can see some of the opinions of the community around this matter of the "RTS Kit abandoned Sindrome".
Then, I ask you: Too many bugs? please, make a list! You, we, or someone can someday take that list and check for solutions to those bugs. With enough time it can be fixed.
We all agreed in this feeling of forgetfulness, but complaining only is like say: "Im dirty" but not take a shower. Lets show we can make the step people. Lets show some movement.
BTW, Im slowly -without rush, but without pause- working on a code pack around steering behaviors, pathfindg, colission detection and resolution, and other staff related to movement AI for the kit. Sometimes I feel like I bite more than I can chew (I friend of mine use to say "too much sand for my little truck"), but I keep pushing anyway :)

Ha!! Interesting idea, about the irc channel, almost 5 years have passed from the last time I open my mirc... but it can be a good comm way for the RTS community... lets see what happend.
Anyway, its good to see ideas appearing. And Nicholas, we hope to see you overhere more often talkin about your project, very intresting option, the steampunk genre (or sub-genre).

See people? We dont loose anything by been a little more *social*. Anyone more around there?
(Well 8 people, 9 with me... We are an Army!!! Or... well maybe more like an spec ops team... without the training, the guns nor the muscles).
You know, there is a story about Che Guevara and the cuban revolution. "el Che" (maybe Castro too, I cant remember) and other 30 or 40 soldiers were in a boat going from Mexico to Cuba, to initiate the revolution. The thing is that they get discovered, the boat was sunk and almost all men in it died. Some days later, the few survivors finally re-encounter after walking for days in the jungle and beaches of Cuba, without weapons, food, or help. The Che, look at them, a punch of demoralized and starved men, and said: "Thats good. We are 8 people now".
You understand that? beacuse I heard that once, but I never understood. :P
