Detail polys higher than original model

When I export a complex shape with Maya 8 the triangles for my models always comes out higher in Torque ShowTool. The poly count is the same I export a simple cube and sphere with low subdivisions, but when I try raising the divisions to a certain amount it tends to get bigger than what it is in Maya. For example a triangulated sphere with 20 subdivisions for the axis and height is 760 triangles, but after exporting it the poly details are 795.

I was unable to find anything odd in the hierarchy of my scene in the hypergraph and have also tried reinstalling the exporter, but end up with the results.
Is anyone else having the same problems or is this normal?
